What's up with the WRANGLER?

What's up with the WRANGLER?
Towing is not an option for me... I would have to pull my CJ with my XJ. THAT is just plain wrong. 😠

That's a slippery slope if argue that the cj tag period was the first step to appealing to a larger market considering they were expanding beyond military use only

I think it started in the 50's with the flat fender station wagons or was it in the 60's with the Tuxedo Park park editions?
And what about the Wagoneers and Grand Wagoneers. were those not Jeeps?

I suppose it could EASILY be argued that any civilian production Jeep that was IN ANY WAY different than the military original...WAS NOT A JEEP. It can also be correctly argued that any MODIFIED version (whether by the factory or by the owner) also ceases to become a Jeep.

Has anyone on here proposed an actual definition of a Jeep? And at what point do we accept the opinion? 60% , 70%, 80% agreement or more?

To me it's a relatively spurious argument, and I'm not at all sure what the underlying point is any more than I understand why we have african-americans and don't have the same insistence on european-american

When Chrystler said, The Jeep no longer exists and they started producing the Wrangler. For me that is when the true Jeep died. It is difficult for me to understand the arguement/debate.

I started my jeep addiction with an 80 2 door cherokee w/t best looking SUV ever produced in my opinion. I believe that these are real Jeeps. Now all the new models jeep is producing really raise an eyebrow for me but the Wrangler to me is still a jeep.

I probably should have written it as jeep, not Jeep. It was the CJ they discontinued for a Wrangler. My bad. ....... a wrangler is still not a jeep, it's a car that looks like a jeep.

Yes we know you think everything but the CJ5 is a car but I think you have no idea what the difference is between a car and 4x4. I will point out one difference and that would be a Transfer Case .

Then why did they name it the cherokee? "Real Jeeps" have nothing to do with the brand. It means a specific model, the original M/CJ line.

It comes from the confusion between the model and the brand.. Too many people forget there was an actual Jeep model and it existed well before there was ever a Jeep brand (Kaiser-Jeep Corp.) and even before the Jeep trademark existed (1950). And those vehicles, the real Jeep, were produced until 1986.

I bought a cj to tow my wrangler! The jeep model ended with the cjs. the jeep brand doesnt end no matter what they produce. the jeep image can end though but I think the current wrangler keeps that alive and hopefully will continue to in the future. the design is still heavily weighted towards off road rugged use over comfort and efficiency.

Great point on the brand vs.. model. Probably the center of the real discussion.

mtnwhlr - Please understand, some of this discussion truly is tongue in cheek. Also, long before the Wrangler hit the streets I completely believed the CJ7 was a huge departure from the CJ5 . Please don't be offended, it was a different time, but way back in 1984 I said, "Real men jump the hump and latent homosexuals buy a CJ7 ." Granted that was a radical thing to say , even then it was said "tongue in cheek". Now that I'm much older the CJ7 is very attractive to me with it's nice wide doors and easily found hard top.

Unfortunately there are several vehicles that I definitely consider to be a nice comfy car with a Transfer Case . Even some ford pick-ups fall in my definition of a car, big fluffy seats, thick carpeting, huge stereo weak useless bed. I remember when the step side bed said something about the owner. It was tough, practical and had a wood floor so live stock could find a grip. Then the step side became a fashion statement. I knew a contractor that completely destroyed a new step side bed in a little over a month. He made the mistake of using a fiberglass fashion statement for what the original step side was meant for. About a month ago while watching a car renovation show the difference was made clear. One of the young punks was looking at the thrashed bed of an old pick-up. He asked the boss why they used wood for the bed, the answer, "It was for looks, a fashion statement." WHAT! It was to keep costs down and give the cows something to grip on. We are doomed......

My, how times have changed ;-)

We live in a far more open time, but at the same time there is little or less room for unpopular attitudes. So, in some ways its less open and at times far less tolerant than it used to be. Homosexuality is far more mainstream than it was in 1984, but when the wrong attitude leaks out, even when it wasn't intended to insult or hurt lives can be ruined. So, yes.... just got back from a little test ride on the last brake adjustment. passed a couple of wranglers but they failed to wave. It occurred to me that it may have gone unseen with the windows up and the A/C on, X2 for the one with tinted windows.

I somewhat agree, the JK definitely brought back SOME ruggedness, but the TJ was not rugged enough, in my opinion.

Again, what is this "A/C" you speak of?

There were Cjs with A/C, intermittent wipers and cruise control to tell the truth. ;)

Peter you can be no fun at all sometimes. ;) might those have been CJ7 's. :) I miss the hisss and the passenger handle in the vacuum motor jeeps.
