I wonder what the tree line was in front of the star in 1949, if there was one.
I see a couple homes on the side of the mountain one is a sizable one.
Thanks for sharing.

They have the trees removed from in front of it, and from the platform under it you can see quite a ways...... I’d hate to be the guy that has to paint it......

And there are several large homes there. The old road up the mountain is quite curvy, and is now the secondary route up.

I have an old pic from the Roanoke Mtn overlook looking down on our property... sadly they dont cut trees back enough from there as it’s now barely visible

I know where that parking garage is lol

And the building I work in is right across the street. I come in by the Rescue Mission, enter thru the side entrance, and the furthest I have to get into downtown is walking across the street . Which is about as far as I wanna go.....

I’m not far from there, tucked away in the county. Don’t blame you for wanting to stay out of downtown LOL

I understand, been there, although many years ago.
Worked 7/12, 7pm to 7am for 8 months
Everyday was a Monday and I never missed one day of work in those 8 months
After the 8 months I worked 6/10 for another 6 months.
It was amazing how it felt going from 7/12 to 6/10
A day off and 2 extra hours 6 days a week gave me the time to do most anything.

The company was founded in 1824 and by the 19th century had become the largest manufacturer of rope and twine in the world.

It was the largest employer in for over a 100 years. The company specialized in ship rigging and was chosen in the early 1900s to manufacture rope used on the USS Constitution.

It went out of business in 1964 after over 140 years of operation. At the time it had no debt and a lot of cash and was bought out by another rope company who then move the business to Haiti.

Some buildings were taken down others are still standing, some occupied, others not.

They used trains to move raw and finished materials within the 5 miles of track onsite. They couldn’t use steam trains because of the rope fiber in the air so they made or had others make trains that ran on compressed air.

Engine 5

Only one of the two stacks remain

A tack machine (made tacks for shoes).

This is how they started in 1824 one would walk backwards in the rope walk. I believe the rope walk was 90yds at that time.

Then upgrade to machines

An early photo. Can you find the rope walk to the right

Post pics of your day trip be it on your property, backwoods, beach, mountains, or a short cruise to grab an ice cream.

I’m sure it would be interesting to see other member’s landscape and what differentiates one region from other regions, or our country from others.
