My CarterCarb is on it way out and needs replaced(30years). I just do not want to lose other stock pieces. Though At the same time I am removing the plastic valve cover with this one below.

Several of you do not like Omix-ADA. Is it okay to go with them for a valve cover?
Going with Polished since it is the cheapest.

yes, the carter is smaller in diameter than the 2100. You can deal with that with a AMC 304 /360 breather but then it is too big around and will hit the brake MC. I man aged to keep the thermostatic air cleaner for a while by cutting and re welding the V8 hat box but when I upgraded to power brakes I had to go with a 7" K&N filter.

 
You can keep the stock air cover, but it will require modification. I have the instructions on my cpu if you are interested. :chug:

I felt that the original air filter is best for the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l engine. compared to an open air filter in the engine bay, but maybe there is very little difference between the two styles.

I am under the impression that the MC2100 carb is a better carb than a weber on a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l .
so I was trying to stay with the MC2100.

Why not have the original carborator rebuilt by a real honest to goodness carburator shop? A decent carburator shop can pull the shafts and reshime them. You essentially get a new carb. when they are done. .....and you know it will work.

Do you have power brakes? If not, it's easy to mod your stock housing to work. Dremel and a cheap aftermarket open air cleaner required to scavenge for parts.
 
My engine is stock right now. And I never really wanted to change it.
But after all these years, I have decided I need to change things to get this engine running well/reliable.
I have had a constant oil leak for years as you guys are well aware about with jeep engines. I am going to change out the valve cover to stop all the oil leaks. At the same time my engine is not running smooth (caused by the oil leaks, or vacuum hoses, or the carter carb)

SO... I am now at a conclusion that I have to upgrade parts in order to keep this jeep running or it is going to end up sitting...

1) new Aluminum valve cover - stop the oil leaks
2) do nutter by pass - to have a smoother engine running
3) replace carter carb for a mc2100 (no more black spark plugs) (I could look into rebuilding the Carter carb, but many of you don't like Carter Carbs and you guys are a more wiser than me)
which leads me to the air filter issue... which is better for an AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l engine.. (see pictures below... mine is the stock)... closed housing for the air or open air filter..
4) is one style better than the other? 5) Is there a big difference or little difference to help guide my decision.
Every car today has close housing on their air-filter which is what made me think to keep the original housing

I went with the open housing. I think most guys that opt to keep the original housing do so for smog inspection appearances.
 
One of the three previous owners installed a Clifford aluminum valve cover my Jeep's 1980 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l .

I don't have leaks of any kind.

I have a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l logo cover, a Clifford cover, and a Jeep logo cover. All are pretty much the same. Buy whichever one is cheaper unless one just strikes your fancy.

I don't like open air filament on an off-road vehicle. I took a cheap (spectre) open air cleaner, dremeled out the bottom of my stock (non-power brake) air cleaner, and bolted the bottom plate of the spectre to my OEM cleaner.

If you have power brakes, you can make one of these.....

I also would like to keep the stock air cleaner if I install a Motorcraft 2100/2150. My air cleaner is the one with the center mount (NOT offset mount) because I don't have power brakes.

Basically I need these modification instructions too please. I want to keep it close to stock as possible and just change the carb to the Motorcraft. I hope it has pics!

Sorry for dragging up an old post but this thread is spot on for me.

Or I may just buy a brand new Carter type BBD without stepper motor if the mods are too much.

Appreciate the response but I would like to keep my original air filter housing. I have a Carter BBD on it without stepper motor now.
