So I have a corded hand held remote for those occasions when a second body can work it. Sometimes, it is just me so I'd like an inside switch also. I searched about 8 pages using the search feature and didn't really see anything I thought helpful. Granted I didn't read every single post. So I'm asking about any switches that might work, wiring diagrams, wire sizes, pictures, links,... In the meantime I'll start turning over rocks on the web.

BTW, used the winch today to pull an elderly man out of the ditch. My winch was like ho hum...can we add another car?

What winch do you have?

I recommend using 1 switch as an arming switch and a 2nd switch as in/out. That's what I did and it prevents the switch from being accidentally activated. Lots of options on the switches, mostly personal preference (covered, keyed, lighted, etc). The arming switch just needs to be a regular SPST. Some guys use covered or keyed arming switches for extra security. Depending on your winch, you may need either a DPDT or SPDT (either was a DPDT will work though) for your in/out.

For the wiring, I pulled 12v+ from the battery, through an auxiliary fuse panel and into the arming switch. Then from output of arming switch to input of in/out switch. A wire goes from the IN output of the switch to the winch control box and connect to the same place as the wired remote IN wire. Same for the OUT wire.

I opted for lighted Carling switch with customs rockers. On the arming switch, the top light is wired into the dash lights and the bottom light is an "on" indicator. The IN/OUT lights are also wired to come on when the Arming switch is on.

I am planning on getting a switch panel from this guy, he used to have panels with " Plan B" engraved on them and thats what i want on my dash, it does not take heavy gage wire since you are only activating the coils which carry all the current for the winch

I just installed this one a couple weeks ago...very well made:

Roadless Gear. Dash Mounted Winch Control

Couldn't have put it together myself for the $

You want a SPST(On-Off) and a SPDP(In-Out)momentary toggle switch rated for DC current.
Use 12ga stranded wire and just tie into the the factory plug.

IIRC, some of the newer winches switch both the + and - sides. With those, you either need a DPDT switch or bypass the switched ground safety by tying all the grounds together.

Here's mine before the switches were fully installed.

And here is with the arming switch on

I should have said the mods were for my Warn 8274 winch, made in 1977.

thanks for the ideas and info. Ol' Trusty Rusty has a Smittybilt XRC8 on it.

BTW, both those links were worth looking at.

Ah, made in '77.. I'm a little jealous. My CJ is 77, would be a good match! I've also got an old 8274, made in 78 IIRC.
