I am having a problem wiring up my windshield wiper switch. Please see the picture and schematic below.

There are 4 wires and the power wire from the fuse box that go to the switch however I do not know what is the correct position for the four.

Does anyone know how to wire this switch?

Also does anyone know what is the small box that is connected to the side of the switch and also connected to power?

Finally my wipers are stuck in the center of my windshield. Is there any easy way to get them to move to park position- even if it is manual.

Any help would be great.

Thxwindshield wiper switch.webpschematic for windshield..webp

If you hold your switch with the yellow wire up, then according to your schematic the red wire is in the center, green to the right, black to the left. The little box is a relay.

Hello Purple

Thank you. Do you know what is the relay for?

Also where is the washer motor located. I can't find the motor and I do not have a tank for the washer fluid.

Thanks again.

Hello Purple

I hooked it up like you recommended.
I also checked to see that the power is 12 V and the fuse is fine.

However no luck - wipers will not move at any switch position.

Also I measured the resistance between each wire at it is as follows:
Black to green 1.4Ohms
Green to read 1.3 Ohms
Red to black 2.6Ohms.

Any ideas?

I don't know what the relay is for. PO may have added it instead of running through a fuse.
The window washer motor is located in the bottom of the washer tank.

I think you should trace the wires up to the wiper motor, see if you have any power there. The motor could be bad. Maybe that is why there is a relay mounted on the switch, previous problems. Maybe others will chime in with more ideas.

It's not a realy but an automatically resetting circuit breaker in case of a wiper motor short or wiring problem. Since there is always 12v going to the motor (even when the switch is in the off position) this is a safety item. See below for how and why the motor always see's 12v.

You need to use your meter and check each terminal on the switch when the switch is turned off.

One terminal should have 12v (low speed parking circuit, Blk wire in your diagram).
One terminal should have 12v when switched to low speed (Green wire in your diagram).
One terminal should have 12v on high speed (Red wire in your diagram).
Note the terminal numbers for the speeds and functions listed above.

Put 12v to any of the wiper motor wires and see what happens on the motor.
One wire will run on high speed, one will run on low and one will park the motor.
Note the wire colors to the motor and wire the switch to the correct terminals that you determined in the 1st step.

The way the parking circuit works is that 12v is fed to the wiper motor via the blk wire (factory color is blk, yours may not be) and the motor runs on low speed until it hits a spot in the motor that drops the 12v. This stops the wiper motor. That is why in your diagram there is a switch in the black wire that connects to the green wire in the motor.

Thank you can you please send me a picture because I do not have a tank and I would like to see where the hose and wires enter the firewall.

A tank? I do not understand? A wash tank? I don't have one...

I can't give pics because my 72 is completely disassembled and custom wired...

Follow the instructions I gave and you can custom wire your CJ.

I hope you are not working with the windshield folded down, since I have seen that break the ground connection. If you do add a dedicated ground to the motor housing while you are in there, it will probably improve the motor operation at least.
