Wipers stop working

When I'm driving with the wipers on, they quit after about 20 minutes. After I let the car sit overnight, they start working again. The linkage is smooth and not binding, so I'm thinking the motor is overheating or possibly the relay.

Anyone else already chased this gremlin down before I start throwing money at this?

'83 CJ7 Laredo w/ intermittent wipers.

Weird. I have had binding issues many times but never what you describe. Good luck solving this issue.

The motor may be bad. You can use a voltmeter to make sure the motor has the voltage it needs.

The above pic is of the switch. The 3 wires in the middle go to the motor. The green wire should have 12 volts when the switch is set to low speed. Red is for high speed and the black wire has 12 volts when you turn off the motor that allows the wipers to get out of the way before stopping.

If both high and low speed stop working then it may be the motor but check to make sure you are getting the voltages first.

Is this the original motor? These little motors take a lot of non constant loads for long periods of time. The amperage varies from 1 to 8 amps on a dry windshield, I hate to think what it has to do with snow. Have you lubed the bearings? Even if they are not binding they can offer a lot of resistance if they are dry, a shot of three in one can make a difference for quite a few years.

The wipers in the CJ are like every other load in a CJ, they are line current through the switch. I am a major fan of using the switch to control a relay that supplies power from the battery directly to the motor. This reduces voltage drop and lowers current used by the motor. If you decide to use a power relay don't forget a fuse at the battery.

IO, I haven't done any maintenance on the motor. The overwhelming rust held my attention until I completed a tub swap. I'm pretty sure it's the original motor so I'll lube it up before replacing if the voltage is good. Thanks again for all the input.
