Won't shift into fourth!

My 1978 CJ7 with the 304V8 and manual 4 speed Transmission has progressively gotten worse about not wanting to shift into fourth gear. This weekend I was only able to find fourth gear twice. The rest of the time I had to go back into third. Is this a common issue? Or will this likely require a rebuild? Just wondering if anyone else has experienced similar issues and may be able to help me with some checks before I load it up and take it into a mechanic.

Have you ck'd the tranny oil level of late?
When was the last time you changed that oil?
How much freeplay do you have in the clutch pedal?

with LG. Can you get the tranny into 4th if the engine is not running? If you can, your clutch is probably out of adjustment. If it won't even go into 4th when not running, changing the oil just might do the trick. I had this happen on my F350 6 speed. Does it grind when you try to put it in 4th while running? or will it just plain old not go in? Grinds: possibly synchros, Won't go in at all, or very hard: Oil is a real possibility. None of the above: you might need to open er up and have a look.
