I have an 81 Renegade . Looks like it was driven through hell and back but running wise a lot has been done to it. Motor is sound, tranny rebuilt, Transfer Case rebuilt, carb rebuilt. Well normally it runs great. But it took to draining back fuel and leaving carb and fuel filter empty after sitting for a couple days. Well pulled it into the garage and it wouldn't start the next day. PERIOD. Even priming the carb several times few drips of gas. It would fire but would pump gas to the through the filter and into the carb. SOOO I figured it must be the fuel pump. UH oh bad luck is about to start. Get fuel pump. Wrong actuation lever. Get correct one and gasket cement is dried out so I make guide bolts to hold gasket in place. 3/8" gap behind pump and I manage to drop a guide bolt into the block. Remove all the :dung: n the way, jack up motor and remove pan. THERE it is. (may take it to the range and shoot it to show my disfavor at its little trick). Back together. prime it up and all runs like a top.3 days later I pull into garage and unload groceries hop in and starts and runs to the end of the drive way. NO GAS in the see through gas filter. Take of lines and fill carb with gas and bypass filter with straight hose. Fires up and runs just chippy until float bowl runs out of fuel I am at a toatla loss as to why fual is not getting sucked by new fual pump when it did for 3 days and ran like a new rig. Thinking the line may be plugged and may try blowing whatever is in it back out the way it came if that is the problem. BTW it has a new fuel tank (5yo) and pick up filter on it as well.
I am at a total loss.

Could be the strainer in the tank clogged. Could just be another bad fuel pump. New parts are not what they used to be.
The best way to check the line is to use a vacuum pump and a sealed container. Connect the supply line to the container, connect the vacuum pump to the container. Pull a vacuum and see if you get fuel out of the line.
If you do and you get plenty of flow, I would have to say you have another bad pump.

Take the gas cap off the tank, and see if anything changes.
The gas might be leaking out of the carb also.
You speak of a glass fuel filter(view-all?). You should have a fuel return system as OEM.
PLZ-post more info about your Jeep.

Another possibility would be a fuel line cracks. They do get old like me and crack. Hook up a manual vacuum pump to just before the fuel pump to check for gas flow. Without the gas cap on of course.

Well turns out is is a bad fuel pump.Pumped fine for 3 days after being installed. When looking things over I could smell gas and one of the casting crevices in the front differential had gas in it. Pulled the pump and the entire top could be twisted back and forth. Only thing I can figure it was a bad crimp job and what little gasket glue combo the used lasted 3 days of engine vibration and it cut loose. New pump and it runs fine once again. Will drive it around some tomorrow and check things out. After all I have done to making it run and drive like it is supposed to this is the first time it has really let me down. My old 68 Jeep Gladiator 1/2 ton was faithful as well back in 1980 too and I really abused that old gal. It too had fuel pump issues until I gave up and put an electric pump on it. I was almost thinking I might have to do that fix again!

If these a China made FP's, they are junk.
Go to NAPA and get their best.

While I agree with you on the going to Napa, I did buy the Napa best water pump, any guesses where it was made? China!!! So I assume Napa has given into cheaper chinese junk is the best choice for them now. If made in America is a concern I would check origin of the part before purchase.
Sorry for the hijack, now back to the regular reprogramming.

How's that WP working? How long have you had it installled?
Our CJ's haven't been made in over 32+ yrs.
Might well be the only source, now :(

You are correct on the age of the CJ's and the motors that came in them. That is a good reason why we have so much Chinese junk parts I'm sure. Mine however has a late ninties sbc engine in it. You would think with tens of thousands of sbc's still running around you could get a made in USA WP from them.
To answer your question, I had to shim the WP pulley to get it to align properly.
I'm going to find rebuilder to rebuild my original stock GM pump and reinstall it at a later date.

Have you tried Rockauto? They offer many different brands.

Napa didn't have one and neither did Auto Zone. Valley Motor supply NEVER has what I need so I don't even bother checking. Oreilly was the only answer and they only had one manufacturer that fit. I am actually thinking I may get a Carter fuel pump online and carry it as a spare with my past history and luck with Jeep fuel pumps.
