I’m getting new tires for my other Jeep they’re about 45% tread, plenty of off- road use left. I want to use these for the CJ until next summer then put new shoes on her.

Would there be any reason not too buy 17in rims for the CJ and use my old tires? I’ve been looking all over the Internet to see if 17 inch rims are a bad combination on a CJ but haven’t found any negative info.

Thanks- Dan

I have 17's on my jeep and like them.. caveat, I have not driven it very much as I am still trying to get back to running. the reason i bought 17s was so i could run JK Rubicon take-off tires.. which i can get around here (texas) for $100 per tire brand new.

17" = less flotation, and more easily damaged by rocks etc.
What size are these tires?
13-You really should look into 1piece rear axles for that 20. ;)

yeah.. its on the list.. along with w/t axles.. but, i have to get the thing on the street first.

I like the smaller size like a 15" rim for off road use as it spreads out the footprint for traction when aired down and allow for a much softer ride.

What LG and Torx said is correct.
On the flip side, you would lose a bead on a 15” faster then a 17”. The 17” has less tire to air down, and more tire choices as well.

I have 15” on my CJ’s with stock and 44 axles, and 17” on my CJ with D60’s

yeah. i agree with that for off-road.. but, my CJ isnt going offroad much.. it might go on some light trails but nothing major.. and if 17s were good for the JKUR that i used to have, they are fine for this CJ..

but the main draw (apart from looks) is that i can run the stock rubi take-offs on my CJ.

Sorry. 255/75/17

If you are going to run 17's there are a lot of options for chrome, those spinning things on the hub caps and little thin tires that will pop if you make the mistake of bumping a curb at the mall while rockin' to the jams while entertaining the entire world with huge speakers plugged into your phone. .... :) But that could be done in a Wrangler or some other fancy new Fiat-Chrysler product...... Oh man, now I know I'm getting old and narrow in my thinking...

You know I can sit here and defend my JK all day but it’s off-road capability speak for itself, And hedge there’s no need to worry we all know you’re narrow minded it’s what makes you who you are.

No problem, the Germans (Daimler-Chrysler) and the Italians (Fiat-Chrysler) make very decent jeep like vehicles. Since one time or another they bought the company name along with being fine engineers they really should. I see'em all the time when I drive by the mall ..... to be fair I also see'em all the time in the field. I sort of admire the guys that take their incredibly expensive Fiat Chryslers to the field and really use them as they were intended.

Lol I’m sorry I made this thread... my Fait and I will have to concede this debate...
however iv decided to be safe and spend the money and get Betty some shoes in her size, good ol 15 in. So’s not to spook the natives.... wouldn’t want to get caught at the mall with a fait spec. Rim diameter... how embarrassing! Iv also decided to sell my fait and replace the POS with a fleet of any Jeep pre 86. 😬

Easy now, this is a CJ board. Admittedly for very personal reasons I do love my CJ's. I will not go over to a Chrysler board and push my CJ love on them and would understand the push back I would likely get. No, I'm not saying you are doing that though. I'm very sure the newer jeep like products out there are represented by their owners here as well. I did say they are well represented in the field and that is the truth. 17" rims seem a little big, but they are certainly out there and are working well for their intended purpose.

The problem is, I like the simple things in life. To me a simple tractor is beautiful, there isn't a single low rider in this world that I believe is beautiful in any way. Granted there is a world of difference between the two with our CJ's falling somewhere in between.
