Build Thread 1980 CJ5 resto/mod

Build Thread 1980 CJ5 resto/mod
I had a guy tell me one time to use RTV on the top and sides of armor and leave the bottom open. His thought was that the sealant on the top and sides woukd keep moisture out, and if any got in, it would drain out the bottom. Seems logical to me.

I was wondering about things like windshield hinges that seem to have the same problem. I was pondering taking some old inner tubes I have and making a gasket to sit between the cowl/windshield and the windshield hinges.

If you were going to seal under something, I would suggest using something like a seam sealer or the like. The main issue with causing corrosion on thes type of "connections" for lack of a better word, is the dirt and dust getting under stuff and wearig the steel out. Then it holds moisture and there is your electrolyte for rust.

Just a few random thoughs from me on this. I've decided to stay away from it and just spray the whole tub, inside and out, with Monstaliner. They have a tintable producct that matches the original paint color of my CJ perfectly.:chug:

My Dad, who spent his entier life behind a hood told me he would kick my rear end if I ever took up the trade. Stay in school; get an easier job he also said...

Wow, exactly what my dad told me. I did get to work in the body shop growing up from about 10 through high school, dad couldn't pass up free labor. Vendors would come into the shop and say stuff like "Hey, you going to take over for the old man some day?" Before I could say a word dad would say "The hell he is. That boy is going to school, this :dung: is too hard."

I regret not learning more from him.

So now I get paid to sit behind a desk and wrench on the weekends and spare time for fun. I hope he would be proud of me for that.

Same here. May he rest in peace.:chug:

I went to work (in the ":censored: oilfield" as Daddy would have said) in production chemical sales three years after he passed. It's been a fun ride since then, but I have switched gears from the sales side to the technical side of the job two years ago. Resident Scientist I am called... Its ok most days, it looks hot/cold outside through my office window sometimes!:D

Have you gotten anywhere with this? Man, I cant wait till I get the point where I can start tearing into the Limited . :D Whats the specs on the rebuild?

I have gotten the stuff put on that is missing in that photo if that is what you are asking about Pete. Valve Cover, oil pan, timing chain cover, water pump, intake/exhaust manifold, yada yada yada... It is all still hanging on that engine stand and not in the frame rails yet.:( This should change in the next week or so.

The Engine was bored 60 over and has all kinds of new goodies inside. I just hope I've done my part right and the leaks stop.:D

Atleast youve gotten yours in the garage and torn down. That puts you ahead of me. :) I tend to over tighten things , use a torque wrench whenever possible and tighten to spec. It really does help.;)

Got a new clutch kit and other goodies in. Going to try and get the engine mated up and mounted in the correct place today. Will take some pics as well. ;)

Pictures! Who doesn't like pictures?
Got the clutch kit put in and the engine mated to the Transmission yesterday.

I also changed out both u-joints and installed the rear drive shaft.

This is how the gas tank sending unit looked when I took it out . The PO swapped in a new gas tank a few years ago and didn't change the sending unit. I think there is some stuff missing on that...:rolleyes:I have a new one on order and will change that out while it is easy to get to. I saw a thread here recently about the access plate for the sending unit. After some measuring, there is a bracket in the way on my tub:mad:. I will just replace what I have with new and try and check it before the tub is back on.

There is not too much welding to do on the tub now, this should be through and get to coating before Jeeping weather is over. I am starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel!:chug:

Almost through with the small repairs on the tub. I purchased a 2'X2' piece of sheet metal and still have a third of it left. It takes WAY LONGER to patch up a small hole than a bigger one!

I had a look at some pics of CJ5 's with tailgates and made the cut with the plasma cutter and sawsall. The hole looks great, just don't have a tailgate yet. Looking for one close, and color doesn't matter without luck so far. Might just have to buy a new one and hinges and bite that bullet.

All I need now is a little time and a few kind words...:chug:

Enjoyed reading of your progress. :chug:

Trying to catch up, sorry. Have you posted what you did to the engine somewhere? Looking for ideas and advice. Just bought a 1980 CJ7 stock with the same engine.

Yesterday, with the "help" of my 8 year old son, got the diffs filled with gear oil. Also got the fuel lines back on and clipped in.

Got an email that the Monstaliner has shipped and should be here the end of this week! This should be a fairly painless process getting it cleaned up and applied. I have decided to not cover the bottom of the tub for fear of exhaust starting a fire with the stuff.

Luckily for me, I have good friends in the vehicle inspection business. Might be able to get away with the hollowed out cat convertor and no muffler. (This is depending on the sound once I finally get Old Blue back to life.)

I would take more pictures to post, but it kinda looks the same as it did in the last ones...:chug:

I had it completely gone through in a machine shop. Bored 60 over, new cam, oil pump, pistons, etc. etc. This is discussed a little on page 8. Nothing too fancy, just made it back like it was new. They tested the lubrication system before I got it back. Looked like it was working by the copious amounts of oil on EVERYTHING when I picked it up. After filling it new oil and the zinc additive, I used a drill and long bit to spin the oil pump to prime it all. Took a little time, but had it flowing like it should.

I can't wait to hear it come to life in a few weeks. I'm getting impatient and might break my own credit card rule to get finished up before the Sept. 1 dove season...:D

Found a complete steering column with wheel for an 86 Cherokee at the Elm Mont pick a part. They also had a complete 80ish wagoner. Engine, tranny and both Diffs. Pics to come for those interested.

This was my first experience with a u-pull parts place. Good prices and hassle free. Was quoted $375 at three different place online for what I got today for $100! I will be back if necessary.

I love the u-pull-it parts places...I'll have to look around to see if there are any near here, but I'm pretty sure I'd have to drive for a couple hours to get to one.

Nice work! :chug:

Pictures for those interested!!!

I got to work today putting a Monstaliner on the tub of my CJ. Welding repairs were done, close enough to done anyway. Got after it all with the wire wheel cup brush on the grinder and make the rusty dust fly! Got it all with the once over then the real work began. I know that the proper preparation is key to any bedliner install. The instructions were pretty clear, wipe with MEK, wash with soap, dry and vaccuum, then wipe with MEK again. CJ5 takes about 3 1/2 hours for those interested. Results are here:

I think it turned out pretty good!

I also got the CJ steering column lower shaft put on the 1984 Cherokee column I got Tuesday. A little work with a grinder to get the grove for the bolt to fit in, but not too bad.

Also got a new key lock cylinder put on and it works great. Only issue I see is that the Cherokee was an auto floor shift. There is this little lever that keeps you from taking the vehicle from park without the key on. When the key does come on, gravity takes over and the lever falls down. It will return when the floor shift auto goes back into park, but I have been struggling to find park in my T-176 ... Might just add a drop of Gorilla Glue to hold it in place.

After a few days to dry, I will get the body back on this and get the wires re-ran. I have set an ambitious completion date of September 1. We shall see...:chug:

Looks awesome. I am very satisfied with the Monstaliner I used. It seems to be holding up well. Like the color

The color (Midnight Special) matches the original Navy Blue very well; almost too good. Needed a better light to see what I was missing! Thank you for the compliment as well.:chug:

Great stuff! I would love to swing by on my way to College Station this Fall to get a closer look. I've enjoyed reading the thread over the last several days. Gotta go back now and take some notes, check out the drivetrain thread. Thanks for a lot of great info, and pics too! One question, tell me about the plastic you had on the floor. Looks like it held up pretty good. Thickness, where to get it?

Glad you like it!:notworthy:

Send me a PM and I would love for you to see it. Spring is only an hour or so from my house and CS is pretty close too. That is Monstaliner. Pretty good stuff from what I can tell so far. Went on about a 1/16" thick with two coats and is tintable too. :chug:
