Build Thread 1980 CJ5 resto/mod

Build Thread 1980 CJ5 resto/mod
Keep up the great work, this is pertinent to my interests!

Barn is re-arranged, do they ever get cleaned out, and rolling chassis was rolled over last night right at dark.:D

I have high hopes of getting the rest of it over this afternoon and paking my truck in the garage tonite! That 33 degree sleet hitting me in the face while leaving the house this morning was not fun.:(

I should have the whole thing apart and start sand blasting this weekend if time allows. I dont want to leave it half done to start over later, and it's supposed to be warm enough this weekend to get it all painted anyway. Fingers crossed;).

your gonna clean up the frame with a sand blaster? what would you charge if you had to do another one:D:confused:, might have to swing by, im wanting to do the same. oh and were you thinking of priming the frame at all, if so, what type you looking at

I might charge the price of a new air compressor if I push mine too hard! I have to make sure I have enough air to get it done with what I have honestly, that sticker has not been read in a while for what it can put out. The sand blaster I will borrow is a pretty big one, holds 50-75lbs of sand I think. If what I have works out, you might have to make a trip over with your frame to get it cleaned up!

Haven't gotten too deep into paint/primer selection yet, other than black in final color. J O B keeps getting in the way!:D

Haha sounds good, il keep in touch. Your moving faster then me so, I'll follow in your steps :D

LONG POST WARNING!:lpopcorn:
Just an update, and nothing more than an update! I think I have already posted the questions raised by this in the appropriate forums.

After removing all frame components last weekend, discovered a crack on the frame near the rear axle.:(

Work has been hectic to say the least the last few weeks/months and has no sign of letting up. I will get back on this project, just need a little time every now and then to catch up with the family when you don't get in before dark for days on end!

Will get the crack sealed up along with replacing the rear shock mount sold for about $10 on Morris. Part was listed as front, but all 4 of mine look the same to me.

I also will be replacing the entire rear cross member/bumper with something WAY more substantial than current condition. This will entail attaching fuel tank skid mounting bolts and getting at least some parts of my current receiver hitch welded up good. When the rear bumper is off, would be agood time to get the rats' nests out of the inside of the frame before sand blasting!

Welder, I am not. My Dad was a welder. After 30 years behind the hood, I never even thought to take it from him. (He would strike an arc and then turn his head away and weld while smoking a cigarette with his hood raised! Always blew my mind to witness that!) My job as a youngster was to fit and fabricate and come up with a way to make it work. Steel is soooooo much fun to work with! Wish he was still here to enjoy this build with me...

Until I get back after it, the wheels are turning in my mind at least!
:chug:

Keep up the good work. You Dad will always be with you. Nobody can take away your memories. I am sure you learned alot from him. Another CJ memeory in progress.

I know the feeling mate !!
Some days it feels like I get to see my little girl eat breakfast and then I'm coming home to tuck her into her bed. Doesn't seem fair.

But as a wise man posted on my build ;)
"Stay the course and keep your powder dry!:chug: "

The J O B is getting in my way but the weather here has been awesome! Keep up the great work & good luck. I figured out the new headlight switch I installed was faulty which caused all my lights to go out. So at least I made a lil progress too!

So, got some more stuff on the way but still waiting to get the frame repairs done then blast and paint it back again. Been kicking rear bumper ideas around and this is what I have come up with:

I know that the suppoprts will be around the fuel tank, but that might just get the bolt up job it had before...

Thoughts, comments, suggestions, editorial opinions?????:chug:

Looks good mate.
CJ's kinda go hand in hand with simplicity.
So I think it looks great.
I think we're on the same path with reverse lights in the bumper, brake and marker on the tub ??
I've got plans to go a little over the top with mine but I've already been down this path with the JK and learnt a few lessons ...
The only thing that I'd always suggest - Is the possibility to weld in a swing away later if needed.

I couldn't find anything on US Ebay - But look at what we Aussies have to offer U !!

Yeah...I found this on Aussie Ebay...DONT TOUCH MY CJ TJ XJ JK JEEP Wranger Warning Sticker | eBay

They take their 4 wheeling seriously.

Yes they do!

This won't be too expensive Dear! That's what I keep saying. Over and over again.

The fine follks at Fed Ex have made good on thier delivery promise again.

What I now have is the new shock mount to replace the stripped out one welded on the Driver rear frame. Upon closer inspection after taking the rear springs off the axle, both of those plates/shock mounts have been broken and repaired in the last 33 years. Got two new ones for replacement there. The shiny HD Greaseable shackles are here as well. I bet these dont break as easily as the OEM that were on there!

So...if my birthday celebration doesn't go on too long AND I can get my welder friend over for bumper fabrication after sourcing raw material, this beast should be a rolling chassis again in a few short weeks!:chug:
At that point, I will deliver some pictures to this thread. :D

Just saw the question as I was adding a post!

Yes. The brake and marker lights will be on the tub. LED if I can find a deal somehow. I am a big fan of LED since they came out a few years back. They draw so much less current and stand up so much better that the old 1157's. I just need to find somethig that will cover up the holes left by the OEM lights; all the way around if I can stomach the costs AND find them aesthetically pleasing!:chug:

Had a productive few days! Got the frame all blasted and painted and other various metal pieces as well.

Frame before paint: And After:
Skid Plate before paint: And After:

After this was kinda dry, I attached the front axle and steering back like it was before I took it upon myself to take it all apart.

Also sand blasted and painted were the front and rear bumpers and also the gas tank skid plate. I just painted the inside of the gas tank skid plate, I just cant see it ALL shiny!;)

Hopefully, Monstaliner will get my color samples sent to me before my son starts high school and that decision can be made for the tub. Still planning on doing it in that material for the inside and bottom. Also going to coat the INSIDE of the front quarter panels with it; I think it will give it a nice look.

All of the other metal components that I took off have already been cleaned and repainted and are in a very organized pile under a tarp on a table in the barn. (Yea right, is it ever organized?)

I will get some more pics up when the progress comes along; hopefully in the next few days!!!:chug:

Use rustoleum appliance epoxy paint in the rattle can, it's tougher than regular paint and can take a beating.
Also I've seen a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l with over 400k miles, with nothing more than regular oil changes.
I've heard of some with more.

If you decide on wiring it yourself consider weather proof connectors, like chevrolet uses, as a matter o fact I combed the junk yard collecting them when I rewired mine.

If your going to spray your own liner, use Upol Raptor liner, it's tintable. A build I saw the guy tinted his liner rescue green to match his paint. Look in my useful info thread on seat options when you get to that point.
Feel free to hit me up i'm an encyclopedia of information.

Oh one other tip if you plan on lifting the jeep or really working it, consider strengthening the power steering mount.

-Didn't use Rustoleum brand, but is is epoxy paint. The things I painted a few weeks/months ago are hard as a rock now.

-My engine has never received regular oil changes. It was a sludgey, horrible mess that still ran fine. The horrific oil leaks were the main reasons for this endeavor.

-This is a thought I had, especially on the under tub/under hood connections. The OEM connections were still good, it was all the hacked splices that had issues. Only electrical things that still worked were headlights, horn, 4WD Low indicator, and one dash illumination light. Everything else was cut to pieces...

If your going to spray your own liner, use Upol Raptor liner, it's tintable. A build I saw the guy tinted his liner rescue green to match his paint.

-I have seen installs with just about every kind of spray/roll on liner. My favorite liner is easy care and hard as nails. Monstaliner, contrary to some folks thoughts, fits the bill for me. I tried to scratch it on a friends jeep exterior with a pocket knife to no avail. I am going to have it inside and just dont care for the rubber feel and hard to wash of most other brands.

Look in my useful info thread on seat options when you get to that point.

-Will do. Thanks for the info and offer!

-No lift or rocks for me, just slow cruising through the pasture having a cold beer:chug:

I really appreciate the input, y'all keep it coming!!

So, I have taken some pictures for the enjoyment of all.:D

After the paint dried on the frame, I have started to get things back together. Front end has been assembled with new bushings and shackles: Rear axle has been put back on as well; same deal with new bushings and shackles. Also have new HD U-bolts and the plate under it all:

The frame cross member/rear bumper I made the other day fit like a glove! (Please keep welding compliments, sneers, giggles, and the like to a mimimum!)I will add one for all to enjoy. Like I have mentioned, my Dad was the welder, I was/am the fabricator/fitter. I did learn a few things from the Old Man though; there is a first pass with a 6010 to hold it all down for the next pass with a 7018 HOT!! It aint pretty, but the metal will break before the weld will.:D

Last, but not least, the overall shot: Looks strikingly similar to News Year Eve of last year: Except for the shiny stuff!:chug:
