Build Thread 1980 CJ5 resto/mod

Build Thread 1980 CJ5 resto/mod
Got the new HEI in and installed with new plugs and wires. (.050 is one heck of a gap BTW) Most of the wiring is at least laying where it should be for now. Went to the parts store and got enough grade 8 plated bolts to hopefully get the seats and seat belts put on tomorrow. With the way this stuff bolts up, I think that defensive driving will be the norm to avoid the use of the 1980 "safety systems" in place...

Need to take the old and new windshield frame to the glass shop next week and get the windshield glass swapped over and wipers and what-not installed on the new frame.

If I could ever get the carb guy to return an email, I might get a carb and adapter plate next week. Might have to look elsewhere...

Everything is coming together quite nicely. Mid-range goal is to try and fire it up next weekend. Sure will be nice to hear it running, hopefully.

I will get some pictures loaded up to this thread whenever I have the gallery room for it; starting to look like a CJ5 again!:chug:

Getting closer. :chug: Bet your dying to turn the key.

As a matter of fact, I did today!:banana:It sure was nice to hear that starter bump...

I saw sparks from the voltmeter though.:( Maybe the wires were on backward? I switched them and it seems to be ok. It moves at least when the key is turned on. (Not looking for too many answers yet, need to reference my pictures and see what goes where first. Questions will be posted in the appropriate forum after searching of course.:D)

I have most of the chassis and dash connected to wires, it looks close enough to start the troubleshooting. Getting the 1986 Cherokee column to mate up to the 1980 steering shaft only took three hours and several BFH's.

Need to get the carb figured out, then fuel, then give it a proper whirl. It will live and breath again soon...:chug:

ITS ALIVE!!! ITS ALIVE!!!

Got a new carb and timed correctly. Two TDC's; who would have thought! It is now running like a dream. An exhaust leak having, CO filled dream!

I really didn't know how much power this engine would throw out. Coupled with the 3:73 gears, it will do all I could ask of it. The tilt wheel is pretty nice. I would highly suggest this to full-figured CJ5 owners.

I would love to get some pictures up; but my gallery is full. Just wanted to share this and say a word of thanks for all the people that have helped me get it done.:notworthy::chug:

Coming along great! What size of tires and wheels do you have on her? I like the look of your height to tire size ratio.
