1984 cj7 trans growl

Just picked up a 1984 CJ7 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l 4 speed T-176 Transmission its been sitting for 7 years got it going runs good now how ever i noticed in gears 1-3 it growls alot 4th is quiet i remember my 77 use to be loud but not this loud!! shifts fine someone told me to change the oil but i have no idea what gear oil/weight to use? i assume its the bearings in the Transmission making this noise? is it normal to be loud?

It sitting that long it may be a dry bearing that will quiet down as you drive it. My '78 had sat a long time and the throw out bearing made a lot of noise when I pushed in the clutch but after driving it some it is quiet now.

Yea this is not the throwout bearing 0 noise when clutch is pushed took it on a 3 hour drive today still loud also clutch feels ok not perf but should last a bit i hope lol. as far as i can tell im suppose to use 80w-90 gear oil in the Transmission ? just want to make sure before i flush it.

Yes that is what you should use. I know it's not your throw out bearing I was just using it as an example.

80W-90 is what the TSM says. I had a similar issue on my 81 when I got it. It had been sitting outside for about 6 months when I bought it. The rear diff was super loud when driving. I opened it up and cleaned out the diff interior, some water had gotten in, then put fresh oil in and it quieted down a lot. It is still a little loud but not nears a bad and I plan on flushing it again in the spring so that any flakes loosened by the clean oil dont grind my gears away.

You sure it's not the pilot bushing.
Does it only make this noise when shifting?
I would be sure to check ALL oil levels before you drive it any more.

makes noise when driving all the time. i plan to flush everything today hopefully it helps.

just changed the Transmission and Transfer Case oil it looked like **** and it was low hopefully it clears up.

After sitting as long as it did.
All fluid levels should have been ck'd, before the Jeep was driven.
Check the axles too.........
All fluids should be changed ASAP-

yea changed oil decided il drive it til it doesnt drive anymore lol then rebuild it got a lil quieter but still loud.
