Build Thread 1986 CJ7 Rebuild - Chasing my youth
Man that Jeep is looking nice. On the shrink wrap areas they sell wire wrap that is coiled kind of a pita to install but much more rigid it’s opaque or black and won’t hold moisture in the braid.

Glad you decided to swap the spring hangers

My Block is at the machine shop. When I get it back and start the top end I’ll probably have a ton more questions for you.

I’ll do my best, mine hasn’t run yet, so that’s the real test. They’re doing the lower crank assembly?

So it was a good score this weekend

I went with the refurbed Sniper unit to save $100. Did come in with a little wear on the mounting late, but overall not too bad.

I also got my new belts in and power steering pump. I do need to bend up some new lines to plumb it, and hope that the $23 a compression fittings seal right. I do need to find a decent tubing bender for the 3/8” hard line. I’m guessing I can rent a beat one from Advanced Auto for free.

Summit delivered and then failed me. Got my new starter, bell housing cover, and belts in two days. Of course $15 ARP starter bolts they sold me where a little short. So waiting on replacements, they covers for free, but argghhj.

Driveshaft shop lengthened my front shaft for cheap lol! Their rear shaft looks nice, but need to replace the stock yoke with one that threads from tcase side and takes way beefier bolts, so that got a coat of new paint. Just need to figure out how to pull the old yoke and then drivetrain is all in place and ready for exhaust fab.

Yes, I’m having the shop balance the rotating Assembly, re-bore the cylinders and new bearings/pistons etc...

Did you paint yours?

Yes, I painted my block. And frankly, I’m very unhappy with it. I used Duplicate-color engine enamel. I ensured that I painted in a heated garage last so it wasn’t too cold. I also used a bunch of their surface prep and wiped the block down as well. Laid down good and seemed good. That was till I started putting some masking tape (Frog tape, not cheap stuff) on it to paint some other pieces and the paint just started flaking off. As I started touching it more, it just keeps flaking. I don’t know if it needs to cure with heat.
Now I followed the same process on the heads and it seems to be adhering much better. So I don’t know.

So, I almost destroyed the garage tonight. I was at the Chevy Chase Xmas Vacation breaking point. Three days and three different tubing benders and three days of freaking kinked tubing. Different types of steel tubing as I try to make new power steering lines.

If tried bending different lengths, different materials and different benders. This is the last part I really want to complete to seal the steering up so that I can bring it to the exhaust shop and not having it burp fluid everywhere.

Grrrrrr, seems like it should be such a simple task!!

On better note, got the starter bolted up with proper size bolts from Summit finally. New bell housing cover.

Sniper was mounted up and got fuel lines finished and no longer dangling.

And lastly, started mocking up moving the gas fill to proper CJ side. Does anyone know if I can just mirror flip like I did and land in the right spot for a CJ tub? If not, someone got locating dimensions for the cut out?

you can use the same bolt/hole pattern and the filler neck housing but the filler neck would not interchange something to do with the tank i can't remember

i kept the yj hole and installed a yj tank/ filler neck and i kept the yj opening, i like the gas filler behind the plate

I have all filler parts, they were on the previous tub that was a YJ tub as well and fit fine. I’m just trying to locate the hole as close to original CJ opening as possible.

Bueller? Bueller... So anyone out there have a CJ7 tub and a tape measure? I really want to locate the filler hole as close to factory position as possible for a CJ tub and itching to cut a hole in my solid tub.

My tub is sitting next my frame looking like Swiss cheese with all the rust holes in it, but I could measure the filler for you.

I’ll measure mine tomorrow in the light it might help to also see the opening without the trim piece. I’ve removed everything and it’s the bar cutout.

As discussed. Here it is, just the opening.

So with the current state of things and highly recommended to stay home, I decide to use the time to better myself. I helped stimulate the economy and try to learn a new skill. This will get interesting, never welded ever....
