I recently purchased a 2 barrel intake manifold along with the exhaust manifold. The new manifold is aluminum and has a water jacket and several sensors. There is also an electric heating element in the bottom of the plenum. The exhaust manifold has an O2 sensor in the center. I am not sure what year these are from. My question is, can I plug up all of the sensor/O2 holes and use this manifold on a 1972 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l engine? What about the electric intake heater? I plan on obtaining a Weber 38 carb in the near future. BTW does anyone know where I can obtain a good deal on the Weber? Lots of questions:)

That intake manifold is from a 1981 or newer AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l . It most likely will not directly bolt up to your head. I have read that it is possible to grind off one (or two I don't remember) of the alignment studs on your '72 head to make it fit. I'm not positive about makling the enhuast manifold fit.

On 1971 to 1980 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l 's the intake and exhaust manifolds bolted together, physically. The '81 to '90 versions did not. There are different alignment studs on the heads to keep the different styles in place.

The water jacket and electric heating element were designed to bring the carburetor up to operating temperature quicker. I'm sure you could plug all of those holes and not use any of it. The electric heater can simply be hooked up to any +12VDC source that is only on when the engine is running.

I am a brand new memeber for a whole 12 minutes at the time of this post and have a very similar question.

I have similar question but about the top side.

Since we purchased the jeep ('82 CJ7 with 6 banger) about 15 years ago it has not had the original carb installed. What ever it had was used by us for about three years and then we put a new Holly unit on but it has never been really great.
My jeep has the original 1982 engine installed from the facotry with one overhaul by me but how do I confirm what carb was on it from the factory.

I also want to go to the new Weber K551 - 32/36 DGEV but there is a caution to ensure that you actually had the Carter 2bbl because if you had the Carter 1 bbl then you are buying the wrong kit and it will not perform satisfactorly. My jeep had the manual 5 speed with AMC 30 rear axle if that makes any difference.

I can take the carb off and post pictures of the manifold if absolutely necessary but the manifold is the original one as stated by the first owner whom I purchased it from with 105,000 miles on it in 1996.

jeeperjim,

The only carburetor option for the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l in 1982 was a Carter BBD 2 barrel. The 1 barrel Carter YF was the only carb option from 1972-1978, and both carbs were available between '79-'81.
