Since the AMC 304 was available from 1972 to 1981 how do you tell the difference between them? I know the engine was changed out but I do not know which model of AMC 304 it is.

the engine size is cast in the side of the block, drivers side I think. The build code for the engine is, or was , on a metal tag riveted to the valve cover.

72-81 in Jeeps, AMC 304 has been around since 1970 in cars and trucks
Your trying to pin down the year of your AMC 304 . As mentioned the tag on the right valve cover will tell you the year, if it's still there.
Minus the tag, pop the distributor cap, points or electronic ignition?
Does it have smog equipment?
Pull the valve cover and ID the head casting #'s
All the above can be swapped out, but it should give you a start.
The earlier AMC 304 's had more HP then the later AMC 304 's.

I was watching this cause I had wondered the same about mine. But mine had been stripped of all emissions, had headers, and aftermarket valve covers. Guess the only info I would still have is the head casting numbers

I would think there would be a website that lists amc head casting #'s with associated years.

I always knew the early AMC 304 's were a little hotter than the later ones so I took the ostrich approach. If I don't know it's a letter one, I can pretend it's one of the hotter ones.
