Hey Guys,

Went to a swap meat here in town, guy had a bunch of Ring and Pinions sitting around, asked him if he had the 4.27 I needed for my Dana 30 front Diff.

He went into some story about them being weak and breaking mostly due to a thin pinion cut...

I love how the gearing is on the highway with my 33's, so I'm wondering if there is any validity to his advice, or was he trying to sell me two new R & P

Thanks, :chug:

There is some truth to what he said. As you go up in gear ratio there becomes less and less tooth engagment.
I know a few people that run 4:88's in Dana 30 's without problems though,
so I don't think 4:27's should be a problem. It's not a real popular ratio though.

Yep, get kinda weaker... My 488's have held up in my 390 v8 though. ;)

My 73 came from the factory with 4.27s, but the tires were only 30" H78s.

They should take a pounding.

Thanks guys... So olddog why is 4.27 less popular? The above issue?

I haven't ran them off road yet, but on the road they seem like a good ratio for 33's

:dunno: It just seems 4:10 or 4:56 is more popular now days, not sure why.
Your right though, 4:27 should work well with 33's. I'd keep them.

4.27 was the standard gear ratio after 58 in the 3B's, at 75HP though not allot of them failed from HP.:D
I would not let that influence my gearing selection one iota.
