Shift fork 'pad' is gone. It's inside the tranny.

Hint-When you replace the 'joints', use REAL Dana/Spicer and avoid the cheap .

Good morning everyone!

Update on an old post: Props to LG who nailed this diagnosis! I had been just dealing with the noise in the tranny until I could find someone I thought could really fix it. I don't drive the CJ a lot, so it wasn't that big of a deal, just an annoyance. Lately, I have had a trip to the coast on my mind. Actually driving the CJ down to Dauphin Island, which is normally about a 5 hour trip. In the CJ, well, who knows. Anyway, in planning for this trip I knew the tranny would have to be addressed. Several people had "looked at it" and gave varying opinions as to what it "might be." Well I was talking to a local mechanic the other day and we started discussing my CJ. I mentioned the problem I was having and that I could not pinpoint what the trouble was, or even if it was in the Transmission . He asked what Transmission I was running and I told him that the P.O. had converted it over from a 3 speed to an NP435. He said, "that' a great swap! Bring it by and lets drive it because I know what the problem is!" I agreed to bring it by. We drove it and he immediately said its not "in" the Transmission . Your "shifter ball and pin guides are worn out and most likely the shift forks are too." Well I left the CJ with him while I was out of town and he sends me a text with pictures of the trashed ball and pin as well as the "egged out" forks. He said that everything else looked nice and clean. Now, we are waiting on parts from Novak. HOPEFULLY, this issue has been resolved!
Thanks again for all the input from the board! I should get the CJ back this week......I will give a final report then.

Ok,I know it’s been a few weeks, but I just got my CJ back Wednesday (12th). After a long delay in getting parts, then getting the wrong parts, it’s finally home! We took it out for about a 40 mile test ride this evening and oh my! It like a totally different Jeep! It was fun before, but now, its so much better! No clanking or rattling and it shifts like it has a new tranny! All Transmission parts were sourced through Novak, so there shouldn’t be any issues. While they had it I had them replace the motor mounts and a weeping freeze plug. Now I am seriously considering that long drive to the coast!

No, he pulled the top plate and basically replaced everything shifter related, including the cane. He said everything internally look great, no issues. He did tell me that he noticed that the a couple skid plate bolts were messed up so he removed/replaced them all with new hardware. I can’t believe how much better it shifts now. I wish that I had went ahead and fixed it when I bought it!

Cool I have one and wondered if the top plate would be positioned good enough to get the top cover off thru the Transmission tunnel cover

Gert,

I dropped by several times while it was in the shop and saw it with the tunnel cover off. There seemed to be plenty of room to work. I was glad too because I knew that the cost would increase if the tranny had to be dropped! Good luck with yours!
