Hey everyone thanks for letting me join the forum. I'm kinda new to the whole jeep world but I have come to love it ever sense I bought my first jeep a while back... Anyway to get to my question I'm looking at swapping out my Transmission in my 77 CJ5 I have the AMC 304 in it with the T 105 Transmission and the Dana 20 Transfer Case I would like to put in a NP 435 (so I can get the lower gear) Transmission and keep my Transfer Case from what I have read the only part/adapter I would need to marry these two together is a new output shaft and new drive lines. I was just wondering if anyone has done this and could let me know if this is the way to go or what would be better... This jeep will be used mainly for off-road use thanks everyone

Hello, after reading up on the NP435 it sounds like a interesting swap.Which version of the Transmission do you have? Novak adaptors seems to have all the particulars for the swap.I wonder why I haven't heard much about a NP435 compared to the SM 420/465 or the T-18 ?

I don't have one bought yet I have been looking at getting one out of a 89 ford f150 but have been hesitant to buy yet because I wanted to do some more research on it and other transmissions... I was originally going to try a sm 465 but from everything iv read they are to long and make the rear driveline to short... The reason I started looking at the np435 is because they are easy to find and relatively cheap.

I did the np 435 swap, but I also went with a Dana 300 transferse. I did have to buy a adapter kit from Novak and shorten my rear driveline and lengthen the front. I do like the swap its real low geared in low and I just have 373 gears so it goes down the road real nice.

Nice so would you recommend switching to the Dana 300 t case then? I guess what's the advantage of switching to a Dana 300 ?

Jeeputah, I would suggest that you contact Novak or Advance Adapters and find out about the adapter kits and their prices.

The only reason I went to a Dana 300 was I had access to a new one for a reasonable price and the Dana 300 is a little lower geared than Dana 20 .
My adapter kit from Novak was $600.

I've had a NP435 in my CJ5 for about 15 years and it is a great swap. The adapter kit will include a replacement Transmission mainshaft and an aluminum adapter plate to bolt up the Transfer Case . In total, the swap will add about 5" to your overall Transmission /Transfer Case length which isn't a problem on a moderately lifted CJ5 . Mine has 4" springs and it hasn't been much of a problem for the u-joints despite V8 power. I also have the NP435 in my Dodge Ramcharger, and another on the garage floor as a spare so you can say I'm a fan.

If you haven't found a Transmission yet, another option is the Ford T-18 . The thing about the Ford T-18 is it also a direct bolt-up to the '76 and up AMC bellhousing and the Transfer Case adapter is only 1" vice 3 1/2". Still requires the mainshaft swap and shortening/lengthening of the driveshafts. Adapter kits are about the same price. I too was looking for a creeper low 4 speed (T-18 or NP435) to swap into my daughter's CJ in place of the T-150 . Found several but the best deal was a T-18 with less than 15k miles since rebuild. Haven't put it in yet, saving for the adapter kit from Novak. Point is, you've got options on a creeper low 4 speed and both the Ford NP435 and T-18 are good swaps into your CJ5 .

Great score, you won't be disappointed with its granny first gear. Now to fix your Dana 20 low range with a Teralow 3.15 gearset and you will have a nice, short, drivetrain package that will crawl with the best.

There's a great score that's a good price for that Transmission . You will be using the bell housing from your T-150 its a perfect fit and make sure you ask Novak about a pilot bushing because its a different size.

I just pulled my np435 out of my 51, it was adapted to a dana 18. I pulled so I could go with CJ7 axles with the center rear diff. I bought it that way as part of a project so I never had it on the road. It looked to be a good fit though.
