My old '77 CJ5 had a AMC 304 , then later a SBC. I used long tube headers that exited out under/through the fender wells and then had "Purple Hornies" mufflers. I had to trim some of the inner fender well, but not much. Here's some pics:



Sorry the mufflers and headers were both black, so a bit hard to see. But hopefully you can see the mufflers bolted right to the header collectors and sitting right beneath the side steps. And there's a close-up shot showing how close where you can the o@ sensor for the EFI setup when I installed the SBC.

I will say though that I didn't like how loud it was or that sometimes exhaust fumes/smell would come in when sitting stopped. New jeep has exhaust running out the back rather than stopped under the door openings like this one.

Long tube headers outperform shorties in any scenario, but the fitment can be tricky. And yes, I can see where the long tube type would lend itself better for a mid side exhaust.
