A pic of the Transmission shift stick would help as well.
I just noticed you said it was a 4 speed.

Edit: the only 4 speed cast iron Transmission I could think of that has reverse over and up without a PTO cover on the passenger side would be a T-98 .

Ford T-98 is over to the right and up.
The case is a Dana 20 , centered tailshaft and machined boss on the right side of the case.
T-18 is over to the right and up until 1978 then over to the right and down
The T-18 has the pto on the passenger side and the Transmission pictured does not.
 
Obviously Jeep didn't use the Ford or Jeep T-98 in a 81 CJ.
I agree 98/20 is a good combo.
 
I'll be posting more pics tomorrow. I had some stuff come up that kept me from getting at it today. When you guys say it would be "tuff" is that good or bad? The owner I bought it from really has new clue about turning wenches and probably bought it with the mods it has now from the owner before him. I'll admit I'm not an expert but I know some things. I have never known numbers like T-18 etc I know the basics and my dad is more intermediate from learning with my grandpa when he owned a garage when cars were cars and not these plastic things we drive now. :chug::chug:
 
You guys are overlooking the star of the picture show. The sheer amount of bungees to hold down the aircleaner is priceless

There's a factory ID tag attached to the bolt that holds the intermediate shaft retainer on the rear of the Transfer Case . You can see it in the Transfer Case picture.
What are the numbers on that tag ?
That will help determine what the original application for the Transfer Case is/was.
 
Sorry all, the life of a first responder on a holiday weekend can be kinda hectic. Bungees came from the seller. Will be working on getting that taken care of too.

Got to take a look under it again and it says T18B on the Transmission .

Also had a question as how to fix this leaf spring plate and or find the part as you can see the shock bolt broke off in it.(:confused:)

A jeep T18b has the reverse to the right and down. It also has an unsynchronized compound or more commonly called granny 1st gear, not used in street applications. A great stock jeep Transmission .

It was ignored, but your motor mounts need work. Did the original or past owner break or lose air filter stud?

An easy answer would be to weld a new stud in to replace the broken shock stud. I wouldn't. That thing broke off for a reason, I think it was brittle and dangerous. All the spring plates are likely the same. Replace'em ASAP. Stock plates don't have the bottom plate. That's a nut protector or skid plate. The bolts should have been cut off flush with the bottom of the plate. Don't worry, this is a relatively easy job. Unfortunately it can lead to more jobs. If I were to do it I'd have to remove the springs, do the bushings and probably change the center spring stack indexing bolt. ...... But I can be an over the top nutcase with jobs like this.

Cut down those U-bolts to clear the bottom plate.
That broken bolt in the first picture, is for the sway bar. Does your '5' have one? :confused: Just weld a bolt to the broken area. I don't run a sway-bar, some folks do.

True, it is on the wrong side, he said shock so I ran with it. From the way is snapped off nice and clean I still think it's brittle and all should be replaced.
 
What you have is a 72-78 Jeep T-18 Transmission mated with the Dana 20 .
If it's 6.32 gearing it would be 1976.5 -78

Jeep had the PTO on the driverside, Ford on the passenger side.
