'83 CJ-7 Need Pulse Air Emissions Equipment

Hello folks, nice to have this resource

I have a california CJ7 that someone has removed the emissions system from and now the gov wants it back on...hmm. I would like to buy, beg or borrow any engine compartment equipment that you may have available( i.e. check valves, tube assemblies, pulse valve, etc). I believe it would be better for me to get a new catalytic as California is pissy about that stuff.

You might want to think about a Howell EFI fuel injection or similiar.These items by the time you get them if available and working would cost you more than its worth.
Howell makes a CA legal kit for about 1200 bucks which a lot of people have gone too.

As for the smog stuff, I've already sold mine off. You're best bet to find stuff like that is craigslist, ebay or an internet used parts finder. Be willing to fork out some cash, the kalifornia smog stuff is getting tougher and tougher to find, let alone to find in good working order. Good luck searching.

According to some of the posts I;ve read it wasn't required to have the old smog stuff.At least they didn't mention it.I'll have to keep that in mind for CA then.

In Ca you have to get it registered with smog first, then you can modify to a more current year smog spec. What that means is just to register the vehicle it has to have a factory spec smog system, then you go to what is called a referee and show him the system you want to install and how it will make the vehicle have less emissions. If it comes within certain perimeters ( and only voodoo witch doctors know what they are) you can upgrade. The system stinks.

Wow hope Arizona don't go that way.We have 2 countys that test. Anything from 1967 and up has to be tested.Wasn't it California that wanted the Big 3 to get rid of the internal combustion engine by 2000 in the mid 90's.Or they weren't gonna allow it in the state

I just recently bought the Howell kit for my 78 CJ5 (AMC 304 ). After speaking with the local smog referee and the good folks at the California Bureau Of Automotive Repair if you have the C.A.R.B. approved Howell system you can ditch all of the emissions equipment except the EGR, PCV valve and canister. You can even ditch the stock air cleaner!

It doesn't matter, according to the ref, if the vehicle had the equipment before or not and it doesn't matter if it hasn't been registered or smogged in over 7 years (my case). You can also put any aftermarket intake manifold on it as long as it has a provision for the EGR and PVC valves. Any header will work also, as long as you have a functioning catalytic converter on the vehicle. You also do not need any waiver as long as you have the C.A.R.B. E.O. # sticker on the vehicle or printed up and in hand. (The E.O. goes into detail as to what is removed)

This was all direct from the Smog Referee in the Central Valley Air Quality district of California as of last week.


Get the Howell kit, an Edelbrock Performer manifold w/ EGR, an Edelbrock Performer camshaft (technically not legal but they can't see it, soooo ) and a pair of Edelbrock shorty headers. This would make a nice power package for the AMC 304 . I'm running a stock intake manifold and cam and I will be putting the shorty headers on along with the Howell kit. I had to spend a bit of cash but it'll all be totally worth it!

OK, I can agree with this
however

I brought a vehicle into Ca and wanted to get it registered, it was a 82 cj and had no Ca smog
I went to the DMV as they wanted to inspect it. they turned me down as it had no smog pump (some obsure air injection system)
So I researched a system to put in it and went to my referee.
I was informed that they Vehicle had to be brought to Smog equiptment of the day first, to see if it could pass smog, before I could modify it to a more current system.
SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
I had to repair the system first and get a CA smog cert. just to get registration, then I was allowed to propane inject the system which makes it an Alternative fuel vehicle that falls in a total different category in the smog rules.

Go figure, I was going to upgrade, but once they had their tax collecting claws into me. I had to jump through bureaucratic hoops to upgrade to better.

Now this was 10 years past, best to go to the referee and find out current codes.

stupid part of this story is I brought it up to the dmv after installing the pump and they checked it off and gave me registration pending smog, I then changed it over and got the Referee to sign it off. stupid part of it was no one followed the air injection hoses to where they went, which was a part I did ohave and I had just stuffed the hoses under the air cleaner housing.

Here they still stuff a thing into the gas tank fill tube to make sure you didn't open it up for regular gasoline.Didn't regular go out with ethyel.

no matter what state your in its got to be grandfathered since its 30 + years old they cant make you change anything start looking up your states statues dmv should have this info anything after 25 years is exempt

so you see, before a registration is issued, it has to meet CA Smog for that year, then it can be modified for and exemption issued

My 1983 cj smogs fine without one of the valves in place, but my smog guy wants to see it under the hood. He's really a good 'ol backyard mechanic that owns a small shop and has been around the block a few times. Anything can be accomplished with a case of beer! He did show me on an old smog machine he uses for tune-ups that the emissions went up when he un-plugged one from another vehicle he had to prove to me that although it was a hacked system it does work without the smog pump . I'm looking for a valve that looks intact but doesn't have to work. Mine fell apart from the heat and just needs to be there...he does have his standards. He is also looking for other cars that had this system so it might be something available at our local pic-n-pull if needed.
If anyone has one for sale or trade let me know.
