'84 CJ7 2.5L - Just getting started on her
Hey there, I am new to the CJ7 community, but i have a 1984 CJ7 2.5L AMC 150 4 cyl. I'm not looking to upgrade engine right now (maybe in the future). Just want enjoy this engine right now. - its pretty stock, it might have an aftermarket carb on it not sure that might not be helping the engine performance out. It starts right up and runs smooth, its just running SUPER RICH. It only have 68,000 original miles. It did NOT pass tennessee emissions test and I'm only getting 11.8 mpg with 97 octane fuel.

I'm going to pick up a new Direct Fit Catalytic Converter, but i'm pretty sure that isn't the only issue. (i don't weld)

1. what can i do to make it run like it was meant to run (and pass emissions).
2. is 18-19mpg even possible in city like the websites say?
3. would a new weber carb help in that department? or any other aftermarket carbs, if so which ones?

thanks for the time!

An aftermarket carb will effectively disable the computer and emissions system.

Yes, the 17/19 mpg is possible with the engine tuned and either the emissions system functioning properly or Nutter'd and a Weber, the correct size tires for the gears you have.

Mine was Nutter'd with a 32/36 Weber and 32's. Got the 17/19.

Why are you running 97 octane? Mine ran fine on regular. I think you are wasting a lot of money on fuel you don't need to. They were built to run on regular. If it pings on regular. You need a tune up.

You can download the 84-86 FSM and it will run through all the emissions workings.

You still have to pass emissions with an 84 in Tennessee?
