aggravated and confused

I have a 1986 Jeep CJ7 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l that keeps stalling. I rebuilt the carburetor, changed plugs, changed ignition module and coil. Runs perfect at idle until it warms up. Anybody have any ideas?

Check the top bearing in the distributor. If it's the least bit worn it will do as you describe. Also check the bulk head conections, and all conections between the ignition and the coil.

At what point does it stall?, see if you can find a pattern. When it does you should check for gas in the carb, could be a fuel pump. Jiggling wires under the hood while it is running can check for bad wiring. Take this problem onto the main forums page.

Just a quick guess, have you changed your fuel filter? If it's stalling when you give it gas you might have restricted flow somewhere upstream.

That is the place to start from. From there go to the pump, check for rotted fuel lines or kinks, clogged fuel pickup in the tank, or a bad fuel tank vent. This all relates to poor fuel pressure, which can be checked with a gauge or pumping fuel into a bucket.

Yes I changed fuel filter and return line is on top. Thank you fir your replies. It runs great for a while but when I go from first to second gear it stalls and take a while to restart.

Wild guess here:
Carburetor choke closed / hanging up causing it to stall?

Starts fine, stalls when warmed up then hard to re-start.

Do you smell a strong gas odor after it quits on ya?

I just had a similar problem mine ended up being the ECU so I just nuttered it and it runs fine now. This is my thread I tried my best to show and describe the work I did to try and figure it out maybe it can help you too.
