amc 20 axle seal problems

amc 20 axle seal problems
Currie built, to my specs.
Same width as my OEM, WT '20'.
Look for a 44, for the front.

LG

A 44 from a waggie would be a few inches wider than cj wide track.
Cut the 9" to match.
You could still keep the tires under some wide flairs.

This is pretty much the plan I have for mine. The only thing that bugs me is having custom length shafts. I'm awhile away from this but love the conversation.;)

That's when you buy good after market shafts and hope they are big enough. :D

yeah if im going the waggy route, then ill just grab the front and rear 44s out of it though. cant remember the year range though. think it was early to mid 80s. thank you grits and OD. ive been looking for a waggy but hard to find down here. can I just clarify that if I go to a one piece conversion on the 20 rear, I can get away from the shim stuff and bolt right in right?

2 very big issues with the 20 rear.
Thin axle tubes that bend/bow easily.
Center section is well known for 'spinning' on said tubes.
With your set up. I would go 9" and be done with it.
The ONLY 1 piece set-up I will install for someone is the Moser. No shims.
LG

Right, No shims. There is a spacer that does kinda the same thing though.

I believe the waggie has to be from the 70's to have the pass. drop. The rear would be from the 80's to have a centered diff. IIRC.
I don't remember the exact years, but the web is full of that info.
I tend to agree with Lumpy though, a 9" can be built a lot stronger than a 44.

And with the 9" gear swaps are a lot easier because of they drop out 3rd member.

I just did a 1 piece axle shaft swap today for a guy. No shims as mentioned, make sure the inner seal is seated, likewise with the spacer, .020-.060 bearing stick out, black rtv on axle housing end, 8 new bolts and prevailing torque lock nuts. Straight forward job.

Kick *** guys. I really appreciate all the info. I think that for now my best bet is to go the one peice route. I have looked into the currie and moser 9 set and holy :dung:!!!! i dont really have $5k to spend on the setup right now. but i am definately keeping my eyes open for a waggy. Hey one more Q...... i measured my axle width, 53.5" wms to wms. is this a wide or narrow? how wide is the wide trac?

WT,

For the NT owners, the 72-75 commando is a direct bolt-in with 30 spline one piece shafts 50.5" same as CJ NT.

That was my dilemma. I just didn't have the cash at the time for custom new axles. And I didn't have the space to rebuild one. I just upgraded my 20 a little bit at a time. The first was one piece chromoly shafts. Then other stuff. You have a widetrac.

WT as Posi said. I thought it should be 54.5 though. The waggie, or scout 44 will be 59/58". (rear the front is always a little wider)

You don't need to buy a prebuilt for big bucks. You can get the truck one you have, narrowed for less than $500. That doesn't include gears or locker of course.

Rob-For the time being. Go with the Moser's and save for the Currie.
That's what I did.
NOT to be a SA-But, you have to 'pay to play' is so true with our CJ's.
