got a CJ7 and was told it had a 4in lift, i ended up coming across new 4in lift leaf springs, so since my bushings were bad, installed these. it did seem like the jeep was lifted slightly more after the fact. i did not do a cv or tc drop.

yesterday i was driving and starting hearing what sounded like a bumping with the rear driveshaft, then immediately clanking and then it pretty much went. i got out and had my buddy pull it forward and i watched the drive shaft spinning but it wouldnt turn the axle, which in neutral the axle is not locked up. at this point im wondering if the pinion was just destroyed. anyone have any other insight, will investigate further this weekend. the ujoints are still tight. and the shaft didnt fall out.

When was the last time you ck'd the diff oil level?
May have spun a hub if you still run the 2 piece axles.
You will find the 20 rear is a true POS.
20 are well known for break'n their carriers.
Pull the cover and have a looky see.

changed the diff fluid less than 2 weeks ago, everything was very clean.

the drive shaft was spinning but the u bolts were not at the axle.

This sounds like the slip yoke in the driveshaft. The lift may have over extended the shaft.

Can you post pics of this DS??
Does sound like a slip spline issue--

Here's my Coprorate 20 kaputnik, this was the last straw so I went with a Dana 44 that my friend Craig at Mac's Jeeparts built for me. (Mac passed away a couple of years ago now :( )

This was all on account of a bent axle tube that couldn't be recognized while it was mounted up. Only after we got it on the ground did it become apparent.

Man, reading that brought back a whole bunch of memories :(
Sorry to hijack this thread for personal reflection, but the offroad world (at least my offroad world) isn't the same without this guy.

Miss you Mac.

golfobx,
If the rear dl is spinning the diff yoke and you do not hear anything, you snapped the pinion inside somewhere. If you hear a fork in the garbage disposal you destroyed the r&p. If you here gear mesh , with or without a scrappy sound it is a broken axle or spun hub. If front of dl spins without the back, it is driveline.
Everyone wants to see pictures.
Interested to know what it was on a axle assembly notorious for problems.
Kudos to Turbogus for mentioning me & Mac.
Have a nice Labor Day! And keep it safe.
