I have a howl from the rear left bearing in my 83 CJ7 with an AMC20 . I'm thinking since I need to do this maybe I should convert to 1 piece axles. From all the reading I've been doing it sounds like a daunting project. My fear comes not in pulling the old ones but installing the bearings on the new ones. Does it make sense to bring the shafts and bearings to a shop and have them pressed on. Is spacing and shimming the new shafts tough. I'm looking at either Moser or Superior. Do the directions they send help.
Are the bearings wet or dry in the AMC20 ?

Not a hard install don't worry your self, I did it many years ago without the help of google, you can do it. I used a shop to press the bearings on because I didn't have a shop press at the time

Dry bearings pack em in grease real good, remember the drum backing plate, these were the instructions I got years ago. I was broke at the time and couldn't afford Moser quality axles

****remember the drum backing plate*****

This is the most important part of working on the rear axles. I hate to admit it, but "somewhat more than once" have I pressed on a new bearing and retainer ring only to discover I forgot the backing or retainer plate. :bang:

Now when I am messing with a rear axle, the very first thing I do is make a note and tape it to the handle on my press.

Make sure you put the correct plate on the correct side also.

Thanks guys. I can see myself forgetting the backing plate. That must have been frustrating. I ordered the Moser axles yesterday. I call a 4 x 4 place today asking if they'd press the bearings on for me. He got back to ma and said no problem. I'm hoping to get it torn apart this weekend and then run them over to him next week. If all goes well I'll have new axles, bearings and brakes by the end of next week. Thanks for all the help. One more thing will be done on my new Jeep. I'm really having fun. Next is shocks, tranny, front diff, and Transfer Case fluid changes. There's plenty needing work but I'll get it.
I also read about the 4.0 head conversion. I would like the HP increase. I wouldn't think about a lift kit and bigger wheels until I swapped heads. Would the HP increased do it or would I need the change the rear end gearing from the 2.73 to a lower gear?

Lol wow 2.73 that's what's killing you, you will need to re gear if you want larger tires

I kinda thought so. What do you go to like a 3.42. I want to be able to drive on the freeway.

It's best to decide what tire and wheel you want and plan everything else based on that, I wanted a 35 inch Goodyear Duratrac so I decided on 3.91 gears so I can still drive on the highway with my Transmission ratio I have and I did a spring over to clear the tires. I spent some time going back and forth using the rpm calculators to try and make sure I get it right

OP-If you would fill out your vehicle info. That would let us help you with R&P choice.
The correct R&P to tire size has much to do with performance on the street and trail.
What size tires do you want to run?
