I recently bought my jeep and already managed to break it. I believe the problem is with the gears in the rear diff. Ive got the stock AMC20 and was wondering if you guys could suggest a gear kit?

I bet you broke the two piece axles. Look for a one piece upgrade and rent a gorilla to use the axle shaft/hub puller instead of your own hands/back.

I'm a pretty stout guy and strained things I forgot I had and it still didn't budge! I just put it all back together till it does break, then I will find a gorilla for rent....

This won't be too expensive Dear! That's what I keep saying. Over and over again.

Broke it? How? What were you doing? What is wrong?

BTW... :ww:

I bet you have stock axles and have spun a hub.

AMC20 from the factory have two pice axles and it is very common over time for the main axle nut to loosen and this allows the axle shaft to spin in the axle hub and rendering the rear axle assembly useless.

You most like need to change out the rear axles. An easy test for a stripped rear axle is to raise the rear of the Jeep, leave the jeep in gear and grap hold of the tires, see if you can turn the wheel.

:agree:

So....if I couldn't get the hub off of the shaft, mine are ok?

(BTW, please don't take this as a thread hijack. It is not meant as such)

What's wrong with your rear end?
It's possible but very rare that the problem is the ring and pinion. The ring gear on the AMC20 is 8 7/8 inches. Big and strong, it's rarely the problem. Everyone is assuming it's the one piece axles because that's such a common problem with the AMC20 . It's also possible you have a problem with the differential or bearings or whatever. We are all making guesses.
If you spun the axle shaft in the hub it makes a grinding noise when you try to accelerate. There is a woodruff key to hold the position of the hub on the shaft. If you spin the hub you can mangle that woodruff key. The extra metal can make it extremely hard to remove the hub.

Not necessarily. When I replaced mine the hub was a B**** to get off, a lot of rust and junk holding it on. The splines in the hub were worn almost smooth. I think the only think that was holding it was the rust. The guy I bought it off of said all he used it for was to drive his chainsaw into the woods to cut wood.
