I bet you have stock axles and have spun a hub.
AMC20 from the factory have two pice axles and it is very common over time for the main axle nut to loosen and this allows the axle shaft to spin in the axle hub and rendering the rear axle assembly useless.
You most like need to change out the rear axles. An easy test for a stripped rear axle is to raise the rear of the Jeep, leave the jeep in gear and grap hold of the tires, see if you can turn the wheel.
Not necessarily. When I replaced mine the hub was a B**** to get off, a lot of rust and junk holding it on. The splines in the hub were worn almost smooth. I think the only think that was holding it was the rust. The guy I bought it off of said all he used it for was to drive his chainsaw into the woods to cut wood.So....if I couldn't get the hub off of the shaft, mine are ok?
