i have a 1984 CJ7 with AMC20 in the rear. i changed the wheel cylinder on the passenger side rear the other day and i went to drive it and now the driver side is making a popping sound. i checked the rear diff. fluid and it was low so i added some and it is still popping anyone have any idea

Spun the hub and axle? :eek:

When exactly does it pop? Under load? Around corners? Coasting?

Since it started popping after the wheel cylinder was replaced I would pull of the drum and check out the brake shoes and springs and all to make sure some thing didn't come apart or loose. I'm assumeing you have drum brakes in the rear and haven't upgraded to disc.

it pops under load. i plan on pulling the drum off the one i replaced in the morning when i get home from work thanks for the advise and help.

Still sounds like a spun axle. . .

That was my first thought too.
It's hard to diagnose a problem like this across the internet but I agree the axle is the most likely cause.

im replacing the drum cylinders (leaky) on my 81 CJ7 with the AMC20 . is that a free or semi floating axle or what. haynes manual is a little to broadly written for a novice like my self. will i need any special tools to do this to?

i am a novice myself if you mean the wheel cylinders are leaking then it is not that hard just have a 2lb hammer handy to knock the drum off and have a friend handy to help bleed the brakes

No. No speical tools are needed but some make it easier, like a spring compresser, a spoon, But I just use a pair of pliers on the springs, the hardest part for me is to get the :censored: e-brake line and self adjusting springs and pieces together. Maybe someone hear has a trick to doing this but it takes me at least two or three tries to get these together and stay together till I can get the return spring on the half moon peice that the e-brake line goes around. I'm assumeing you have self adjusting brakes? Don't know when they started putting them in.:)

I would say that while this tool isn't a necessity, it sure makes working on drums a breeze - you can pop springs on and off without shooting them all over your garage.

Drum Brake Spring tool -->>

A brake adjusting spoon is also something that is nice to have...

Oh and this maybe known but the wheel cylinders are differant on each side of the brakes. I sent my wife in to a part store with pictures and every thing to get the right one, she called me saying that I had the wrong cylinder on it now and needed this one well I explaned to the guy on the phone what I needed but he cleary said the computer says I needed this part, I got mad and hung up on the guy. My wife brought it home so I went in and returned it, for the right one. Needless to say I dont even deal with this guy even if he's the only one free at the time, I just grin and say I'll wait for someone else, and he always shoots me this dirty look. I know this is off the subject but just had to share this little story!!!
