AMC 20 Retube?l

AMC 20 Retube?l
I guess I'm lost to the reasoning why. Better question is when are stronger axle tubings needed? At what point will stock axle tubings bend or twist? Unless you're dropping in a HP big block with loads of torque, or extreme rock crawling where suspension is under extreme amounts of flex, is it really a necessary mod?

I haven't needed one. I used to run 39.5" x 18" wide Boggers. Used to jump the entire Jeep off the ground at Pismo Beach. Remember these are not F350 double cab 4x4's with their portly weights. Mine probably isn't much over 2900lbs???.

It's not really about power or abuse. Rear axles fail for any number of reasons. The worst abuse comes from the snatching and grabbing, loading and unloading stresses found in off road driving.

Got any pictures, as I know Pismo well.

Re: AMC20 Retube?

I seem to recall reading (on the internet), that AMC used beefier axle tubes on the 20 when it was put under the Wagoneers (or maybe their J trucks?). So, if that's true, thicker tubes would work.
True, only the 80 to early 86 waggy/J-trucks (except J-20) had the beefy tubed, one piece 20 rear axle.
