Amc 20 with 33s

Is there anyone that has AMC20 with 3.54 gears with 33s? If so please tell me how it performed with 33s. Please give me advice or tell me how you think it will perform. I will be doing some decent crawling mudding so just tell me your thoughts. Please and Thank you.

I have a stock AMC20 with 33's. I never had any problems but I only do mild to moderate trails, no mudding.

What gears do you have?

I had a AMC20 with 3-73 gears. I ran 33 boggers for years in the mud and trails. worked good but had problems with axle seals leaking

I run a AMC20 w/4.56 gears, and OX locker. I'm running Dunlop 35x12.5 now and before TSL 34x10.5 Swamppers. I crawl some lil rocks in the desert, no prob. so far. Oh yeah my seals seem to wanna leak to

I'm not sure ill look when I get home but when I had the Transmission rebuilt the guy said it was geared real low.

I have the AMC/Gear/Tire Size combo you are asking about - It has been fine but I need to go to the 1 piece axles soon before something bad happens. I use my jeep in the river/sand so that is my experience - I also do not have a locker in the rear.

As for the Seals - the sand eats them up and I change them yearly and all the fluids get changed weekly.......

Looks like I would be the best one to give advice here. I started out running 31's with a stock AMC20 and 3:54 gears. Didn't really notice anything different. Now when I went to 32's. Yes 32's, I was unable to use 4th gear most of the time. I am now running 35's with the stock gear. However, my AMC20 is now trussed. I haven't done the axle upgrade to one piece yet or re geared. I absolutely hate driving it. I Never get into 4th gear and and have to keep the rpm up on the motor to move good.

Now, I'm running a 4 banger and I have a AMC 304 to drop in it soon hopefully. However, I'm told that the 4 banger and AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l run about the same RPMs so even though you may run better with a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l your still in a higher RPM band which is harder on the motor. I am thinking of swapping in 4:56 gears but want to wait until I drop in my AMC 304 . I've heard many folks dropping in V8's and keeping the stock gear and doing very well with that step-up...

I currently run 33's with 3.73 gears and a T-4 , but my wife had and 84 with AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l / T-5 / 3.54 gears and it got really good gas mileage. But it wasn't a "crawler". Good for the road, not quite as good for the trail.

I have always had 3.54 geas with 33 inch mudders in my CJ5 for 23 years. For the first 13 years I had the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l motor with a T-176 4 speed. It did very well for me and I could easily cruise at 75 on the highway. My motor had a good amount of power and being pre-computer I did not have the failed electronic advance to deal with which is where most people lose their power. I drove my Jeep from Utah to CT, 2400 miles and it never skipped a beat at 70 mph the whole way, except for the Wyoming pass over 8000ft. For me they are a good all around gear as long as you have a good lower first gear in thre Transmission .

I have a 78 AMC 304 -3spd w/ 3.54 gears and 33" ProComp mud tires. It runs fine on the road, and on stock to moderate trails. I don't do any rock crawling.
