I have posted several questions about the QuadraTrac which has been a source of of several problems for me. Changed the chain as posted in another thread.
After about 40 miles, I checked the ATF (QuadraTrac converted to part time-uses ATF), and noticed METAL FLAKE in the fluid!

Pulled it apart and figured out what happened. When I assembled it, the chain was not running entirely straight on the gears. It was off by about 1 row of teeth, or a centimeter or so. This was causing the chain to run against the edge of the gear (the one that has the output for the low range). This was causing tiny flakes from the chain and gear.

Fortunately neither look like they have damage that will cause a problem, but here is the question.

What holds the gears in place to keep them from moving back and forth in their splines? I think this was an assembly problem on my end, but could it happen on its own?

Thanks

Thanks for the reply. It appears that all components are in place and in good shape.
So would the correct assembly procedure be to line up the gears with the output side even with the splines of the front yoke, ensure that the chain is running smoothly and straight, and then assemble? Am I correct that the tightening of the yokes is what keeps the sun gears in place and straight?

Thanks

I would try to get a factory SM, here you can find the whole procedure
how to properly reassemble the unit step by step. I always use this, it
really helps, because the Quadra-trac is missing in most manuals I know.
You can get a CD with the SM on ebay for less than $30.
There you also have a troubleshooting section for the QT.

If you could post some pics concerning your question, it would be a bit
easier to give answers.
