I finally got the sbc sitting in my cj (woo hoo !!!) and need alittle more help. I have a 12si alternator on my AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l . The sbc has a 10si that came with it. I was just going to swap the 12si on to the 350 and keep my wiring the same. But i believe in the many posts i read i had to wire the "chevy" starter differently. I thought i printed it off but cant seem to locate it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, mike

yes the chevy starter has the solenoid mounted on the starter where as the Ford/Jeep starter has the solenoid on the fender. I believe that you could wire it 2 different ways keeping the stock wiring intact if you want, one being the same way as currently with a jumper wire at the chevy starter across both lugs so that when you hit the ignition switch it will energize the Ford solenoid and send power to the chevy starter and the jumper wire will activate the chevy solenoid. Or you could wire the starter how chevy does and run the solenoid power wire to the ford solenoid and the main starter power wire directly to the starter. either way will keep your stock wiring intact.

yes, i would like to leave it hooked up the stock way. And i really appreciate the help !! and what alternator actually came stock on the cj ?from all the posts i read i couldn't tell if it was the 12 or the 10si. Its strange, its like the more research i do the more confusion sets in !!I hate that ! I do have a couple more questions, and hope this one isn't to stupid. But does it really matter which way the heater hoses are connected? I've got a port right of the thermostat housing and one directly off the long water pump? And my last one (for now) which wire do you use for the hei dist. I have 2 wires coming out but think i only need the power to the distributor as it is grounded through the block. Thanks again for the help!!!

The easy one first, HEI only needs the switched 12v to run the other is for the tach and it is grounded thru the block, the water hose does matter I will have to go back and look to see if the water pump is the return side or the pressure side, the 12si wasn't produced til 1983 so you should have had the 10si http://www.madelectrical.com/electricaltech/delcoremy.shtml

so just to make surely I should be fine putting the 12si from my AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l onto the sbc 350 because it looks like it should be a direct bolt up. Do you happen to know if there was a specific wire they were using for the switched 12v? And thanks again for all the help you really have no idea how much its appreciated. And reply whenever you have a chance, I built tires for Firestone for years on the night shift so I get it.I look forward to hearing from you again !!

Wire #13A / w tracer to the ignition control module should be your hot wire to your HEI. it powers your ignition control module, starter relay, and coil, so when you turn your ignition switch to the on position and start position you should see voltage
