Now that I got the waterpump/tstat housing debacle sorted out, and the ignition/missing problem sorted out by doing the team rush, the only issue is the carb. The jeep had been sitting in storage for 2-3 years, probably less then 200 miles on it total in that time. It runs, but the automatic choke wont idle down when the clutch is in, unless I blip the throttle. It then idles right on down, till the next light and such. I havent driven it much yet myself, but researching this last night, I cam across the mc2100 upgrade, and wondered weather I had a one or two bbl carb. Two bolts holding it down, 1bbl.

Are there any advantages to keeping the one bbl and futzing with it, or just get the adapter and put the money into the 2100?

im in the same boat man, my suggestion is a rebuild kit and a good deep cleaning, learn about the carb (hint its not worth keeping) do not attempt to jet it or do anything other than clean it up and put it back down so it will work while you save up for a proper replacement fix, im saving for the gronk package.

just my .02 but its a learning experience and if there arent a ton of miles on that 1bbl then a deep cleaning with that rebuild kit will make it liveable till you get the 2100 sorted and installed.

I dont like spending money on something just to spend it again when I upgrade, lol.

The Gronk package is what I am looking at also, but only want to remove and replace everything once.

More than likely the choke linkage is sticking, and I imagine the choke t-stat could be faulty. As long as the carb is not the electronically controlled ( to a degree) version, should be a fairly simple carb to disassemble, soak, and install a kit. Maybe $35 for kit and float, and if t-stat is electrical, and $25 or so for it. Let us know what you do. :chug:

An 83 with a 1 bbl. is a bit unusual.:wtf:

Is this a I6 or a 4 banger??

How about filling out your profile?

the Gronk stuff may cost more but the intake and exhaust manifold will be the hard part to find. Are the intake and exhaust bolted together at the EGR valve??

As I discovered in my water pump debacle, the engine is 75-79, lol.

My understanding is Gronk sells a 1-2bbl adapter, so replacing the intake is not necessary. I may be wrong, lol.

But still, is there a compelling reason to keep the 1bbl, if I have to do work on it anyway? Is it more efficient on mpg?

no, not in the least. i was saying that if its running badly that a rebuild kit is 20 bucks at autozone and you can clean it up so that it will run atleast kind of pleasantly until you get the gronk kit, and yes his adapter can mate a 2barrel carb to a 1barrel manifold, in the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l 's case that is arguably a nice setup from a volumetric efficiency standpoint but im not gonna really get into that here.

How about filling the profile for those of us that have slept or maybe didn't pay any attention to your water pump problem??

putting a 2 bbl on a one bbl manifold is a waste of a 2 bbl carb.:D

The 2 to 1 bbl adapter works well according to gronk

Why? I mean, what does replacing the manifold get you other then two more bolt holes?

A much larger intake passage. The AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l does not lack for fuel as much as it lacks for air. Your setting your new carb on a restriction. I would be surprised if you do not run more than a bit rich with this set up. The adaptor works, the carb sets on the engine and the engine will run but did you get any increase in power from it? did you get the kind of increase you were looking for? That, I doubt.

Were you not the one that didn't like to do things twice? you could acomplish the same result with a $35 kit as the Gronk package.

Build the 1bbl, stack some coins and replace everything above the block deck, gasket, 4.0 head, pushrods, manifolds, you will have acomplished something.

ill argue the other way. :D just cuz

the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l is a small motor, its also low rpm (relatively) your intake velocity is low and any percieved restriction is going to be minor, trust me the motor breaths just fine thru a 1barrel intake, whats going to happen is effectively another/continuing venturi under the carb (the adapter) that will work as a diffuser and help further atomize the fuel mixture and smooth everything out before it gets to the jugs, i believe that a 1bbl manifold with an adapter and a 2100 on it will flow a more consistent fuel/air mix without having to go to one of those heated intake manifolds, theres a reason those exist and i think our manifolds with an adapter avoid that with the same concept as a carb spacer.

There is a couple of YAF carb rebuild videos on youtube. Just google YAF rebuild... I'm doing my carb this weekend and found a spare yesterday.Paid $20 for it.... good luck.

i'm doing the Gronk Mc2100 if you go with the MC2100 i would get a 2bbl intake, headers and the ram air cleaner!!!! its some coin. but if you only want to do it once....i havent heard or read anything bad about this set up maybe the cost, some slow response time, Do realize Gronk sells $3000 a month worldwide. On top of a job! good luck friend.

I have one of those heated intakes, i was told its for cold starts not mixture?

Cold starts? U mean while there is cold coolant running thru it? What's that gonna do, the heated intake is for better atomization when at operating temp, even heat with no hot or cold spots in the intake tract.

my heater is below the carb looks like a "hegdehog" has one red wire runinng from it. so i'm not real sure? i dont have coolant running through the intake.

Oh sorry I originally meant the water jacket intakes, that's what I've mostly seen, that's what Clifford performance sells
