Build Thread Aussie CJ7 - 78

Build Thread Aussie CJ7 - 78
Waiting for paint to dry so I pulled down the calipers.
Heaps easier just to put a block in the caliper and blow out the piston with compressed air, but for those with just rocks and sticks .. I had to gently tap out the piston.
Should also say I have a 78 which means 6 bolt 1 1/8 set up.
You can see the piston almost right out and then once she came out ... Not real flash at all ....
Although it looked like the piston was fine with only gunk built up, no pitting or damage.

So here is were the problem lies ...
The seal is the ring at the back and the dust cover sits in that outer lip of the piston in earlier photos and then in the outside lip of the caliper.
After a good clean you'll see the seal lips are badly corroded - Worst between them both.
As I thought the piston cleaned up good but the caliper is rat-:dung: ...
So for $60 a caliper, that's cheaper then I can rebuild them so I'll be buying new ones with some brake-lines, disks and pads !!

Lastly,
I cleaned up the tank again and bolted her back in.
It sure is nice working on things you've already fixed, no snapped bolts, ect - It all just bolts off and back on !!
Then I rolled the 20 back in and bolted it up too.
Little bit to go yet, dif is only sitting on spring perches and needs bolting down.

Great pics and step by step of what you are doing. It's looking really good.

Thanks alpha6 !!
I always try to get a look at some pics first when planning a job, so I figure if I can get more pics out there for everyone help with their builds then then I'm on it !!

Picture update for everyone ....

Bits and pieces to go then it's back onto the body mounts ... but it's exciting to see it going BACK TOGETHER !!

My other baby.
I'm getting it ready for sale and so I'm supposed to working on it and not the CJ ...
Spent 6 months doing bits and pieces to a home made roof rack.
Anyways, I got the rack finished and bolted on over last weekend and wanted a photo on top

You sure that's you? I kind of had this in my mind of what you looked like. :D

Got some more bits and pieces done today but thought I'd share this.

I'll be running the rear diff breather up to the engine bay and mounting all breathers beside each other so I thought I'd make a mounting bracket, and put a splash shield on it.
That way if I want to put some fancy breathers on later I can.
Only,
Once I'd primed it I realised the GM Turbo 400 also has a little breather pipe, which means 2 axles, 1 Transmission , and 1 transfer = 4 holes not 3 ... :(

So it's take two tomorrow ...

Nice job on bending the piece. Looks great...now you are all practiced up. :D

Haha this crossed my mind too. I have to get up and play my didgeridoo just about every time I start reading this thread.

Ok the rear brakes are nearly done but I have to confess I have one of those super rare CJ's that has an operational park brake .... NO LIE !!!
So I knew they would have been overhauled not too long ago.
They were caked in dried mud and worse so I hit them pretty good with a wire brush and they finished up alright. No leaking wheel cylinders and everything was in order.
Picture 1 & 2 - I then taped up the shoes and soaked everything in WD40. So WD (unlike say engine oil) dries pretty quickly and you'll see the photo two days later shows it looks much better, is all freed up, but not soaking in oil. JUST DON'T GET ANYTHING ON THE SHOES !!
Picture 3 & 4 - Got into the drums and scaled them right back for painting. Given drums are a bit of a throw away item (once too thin) I only sprayed them up with some Etch Primer and then coated in a "Charcoal" Hammer Coat.
Almost done on the rear ...

You mean your parking brake used to work... :bang: till you took it all apart and "fixed" it. :D

Bah ha ha ha !!
No no no ... That's not just the brakes !!
I often wonder if the thing will ever go again !!
Transmission , suspension, brakes ...
How much will NEVER work again, or just fall out or blow up, after driving it into get inspected

I heard about those Australian inspections...tough. Found this pic of the one closest to you.
