Build Thread Aussie CJ7 - 78
You going to connect in parallel or isolated? Mounts look good...heck of a shop you must have there.

Newbie here. Starting a frame off soon and wanting to learn all I can first. Thanks for all the detailed data. It will be a huge help for sure. Also, you have great determination and fabrication skills. Jeep looks awesome.

Hope I can do half as good.

Bob :chug:

Got about three jobs on the boil at the moment.
Cutting and grinding over the last day or so.
Here's one of them.
Plan is for a battery each side. Starter on the drivers side, auxiliary on the passenger side.
They're made for Optima's but will be able to fit others if I'm stuck - Or clearly until I get an Optima  I should just pull the one out of the JK .. :D
How you going to fit a battery on the drivers side?

Isolate to run winch and interior gear off a deep cycle.

Thanks Bob !! I just figure when I'm planning little jobs I hit the net for all sorts of ideas and photos. Figure if I can help anyone else to do the same then I'm happy !!

How you going to fit a battery on the drivers side?

Pictures below :D

Dude, it's Australia...everything is backward and upside down there... :D

Now don't make me get out the map with Australia on the top again !! :D

Well just about finished - Just need to sort the mounting holes and they'll be tossed into the "Powder Coating" pile.
These show the welding finished.
And then tapping out the various holes.

Tap and Die set - Worth EVERY cent !! I think it was somewhere near $100.

So you get the gist of the mounting tabs.
Because they're out of 3 mm (you'll need to convert alpha6 :D ) you can tap the thread into them.
So one end bolts in prior to putting battery in, the other end bolts in to lock down the battery.

So the Century battery is thinner then the Optima and the exact same principle will be in place only it will be from the front - diagonally to the rear - Optima batteries have three cylinders front and rear and so they should clamp them down between them.

Hope this makes sense ...

Clamps look nice and strong. The batteries shouldn't come out when you roll your jeep. :D. 3mm = .118 inches. 2.54 cm = 1in. Personally I don't convert... I learned the system in the military years ago. ;)

LOL, Yeah I got to thinking about that after I asked. The driver is the passenger and the passeger is............

Are you planning on modifying the inner fender?

How come not a over the battery hold down? I had a oem clamp on mine fail and lost a battery, but it clamps to the front.

No mate, no mods to the fenders to fit the battery cradles ... I'll try to get some fitted photos this avo to demonstrate.
I just like clamps a lot more - Always have  no idea why ??
Figured it might show off a clean duel battery set up more ??
Might be one of those upside down things alpha6 (who really should give us a name to quote :)) keeps talking about :D

Anyways - Here is one of the other jobs that have been on the boil.
I extended the sway bar links an extra 3.5" to compensate for the 3.25" lift.
All done and ready for the powder-coating pile.

Very cool making your own parts like that. I need to work on getting me some skills on a welder.

Mate I can't remember what I paid for it at the time, but I bought a nice little Lincoln Mig and run gasless wire through it and I LOVE IT !!!

I make almost everything with just it, and a 4" grinder.

Taught myself to weld making a rear bar for the JK and I think I've just got more ambitious since,... maybe not so much, more skilled ...

Recommend EVERYONE have a crack !! Nothing better then saying you made it !! Just need to be persistent and your own biggest critic !! That way you keep trying to improve.

Aw, come on amigo. You don't have to be your biggest critic...I will do that for you. :D

Nice work by the way...lets just hope they don't snap while you are doing 70 mile an hour down the road...excuse me, 113 kilometers per hour. ;)

BAH HA HA HA HA HA !!

Yeah not to fussed about Sway Bar Links ... I had a knock under the TJ for months before I stuck my head under to find a Sway Bar Link busted
Spent another couple of months before I got to it ...
There's plenty of other things that could blow up at 113 kms on old Juliet that I'll be far more worried about !! :D

No mods to fender.

Battery Trays in the Powder-Coating pile.

Got to look at the rock guards now so I can jack up the body to clean the last of the frame.

Those trays turned out very nice. Getting any sleep yet? Everyone doing great I hope.

Not much to post, unfortunately.
I've been tinkering with a lot of little sketches and checking things out to see which way to go on a few of the build aspects.
Seems like I've been busy with not much to show :dunno:

I made up a heap of little tube brackets to screw into the frame to retain the diff breather tube - Not really worth posting :dunno:

Tomorrow I'm back under the old girl to have a crack at finishing the rest of the frame - I HATE it so much I've done so many little jobs to avoid it :( But tomorrow we move forward !!

Might have some decent photos to post soon ...

ALPHA6 - All good on the home front but not much sleep yet ...

Not that I am keeping tabs on you, but the last time you did any frame work was the end of October! As far as the breather brackets, is it under hood or a snorkel type? Just check your crossing point carefully... :D

Ha ha ha ha ha ha !!! .... Well it's red, only no Jeep of mine would EVER have tube bumpers !!!
The truth is however we tend not to walk creeks before crossing over here ... well, up here .... cause the creeks up here are full of big lizards that don't mind chewing up a man !!

Ok, ok so this may look like I've been side tracked and NOT got to grinding the frame .... but I can assure you I needed the exhaust out to get at the chassis ... :D
So it might be obvious to a few that the old girl had a little bit of an exhaust leak ... that sounded like it was blowing straight out of the intake manifold ... well you might be able to see it wasn't far from that at all.
I love finding a chunks of gasket gue attempts to stop exhaust leaks .. when I pulled it away I found the 1/4" hole in the header.
