In the process of replacing my AMC model 20 axle shafts with one piece. My dumb question is this, Which way does the small end of the tapered bearing point? Logic tell me toward the diff, But when I pulled the drivers side shaft out, the taper is pointing toward the hub.

Thanks for the info, after reading I am still unsure. It is my understanding that the "bearing cup" or outer race is pressed into the axle tube. The bearing and inner race is pressed onto the axle shaft. If I am correct the smaller part of the tapered rollers goes toward the diff., as this would be the only way to pass the axle with the pressed on inner race into the axle tube. Hopefully I didnt confuse you too
