You are right to stop.... Stop and think a bit ...... Stop randomly removing parts ....... try to stop being intimidated ......
The main stick isn't something to worry about, nothing is going to jump out and get lost. Your dealing with big sturdy simple parts. Put the Transmission back on the bell housing, a couple bolts will due. Remove the 6 or is it 8 bolts around the main stick. Tap the side of the Transmission top cover and it will pop right off as a solid unit, nothing to lose, nothing to break easily. Set it asside and cover the big gaping hole in the Transmission .
The 4 wheel drive stick is easy to remove, can't remember exactly. One bolt makes up the pivot, a couple small cotter pins and a couple pins. Easy, nothing to it, you can't screw up any sort of timing or anything delicate.
This is a case where taking off a few extra nuts and bolts will save you hours of work around time. If something is in the way, take a bunch of pictures, then remove it. This is 70 year old technology, made for farm boys and army guys to fix in the field.
You will need to make sure the shackle pivot on the frame are the right size for the springs now have.
