I would like to know what Transmission setup to use behind an 89 AMC 360 in a 78 CJ5 :flywheel, bell, clutch, Transmission , etc The Jeep has a Chevy 406 w GM SM465 and a Dana 300 TC now, the engine is a little to radical for a street Jeep and I prefer pure bred vehicles

"Pure bred" is kind of a mis-statement really as the 360 was never factory installed in a CJ. However, it does bring it back to it's AMC roots.

So following that train of thought, if you aren't keeping the 465, the only other transmissions I would run would be a T18a or a 727 auto (because of drivetrain length)

Eh an AMC v8 is an AMC v8 the external dimensions of the 360 are the exact same as a stock AMC 304 . As far as "pure bred" Even in stock form Im not sure an AMC era CJ can be pure bred considering that they are a hodepodge of AMC. GM, and Motocraft Parts.

To to OPS original question. Sounds like you want a street Transmission , so I'd vote 360 with a NV3550 or ax15.

probably the easiest solution is keep the 465/Dana 300 you should not have to change much to keep it and you wont break it with the 360:chug: if you get into swapping trannys out remember you will get into new driveshafts, clutches/linkages buy and tranny mounts to figure out.

I would just run it like it is

Throw a mild cam in it and run it.

Thanks I don't like to way the 465 shifts or the ratio spreads, its really a 3 speed w granny low

I have plenty of hot rods and that's where the 406 is going to end up (81 Z28)

The parts to adapt the AMC engine to the 465 is going to cost $500 so I would rather just find a stock Transmission , bell and flywheel out of a CJ V-8. I found a nice 360 with everything ready to go except its an AT

There isnt alot of choices for you in a stock Transmission from what I believe your looking for. The T-18 that came in the Cjs is probably the most stout Transmission but is the same set up as your Sm465. I gather you dont want an auto Transmission so that leaves out the TF999 or the even better tf-727.

That pretty much leaves you with the T-176 4 spd. This is a moderate Transmission that can hold up to V-8 power. Id get one and give it a fresh rebuild for your application. Make sure you have the correct pilot bushing and keep it tourqed down tight. Failure of the mainshaft bearings is largely attributed to those 2 specs. ;)

is there a data base with all the various Transmission choices with the ratios? Will a T-5 work in a CJ5 and keep the Transfer Case in the same location?

Probably not. Even if the Transmission mating surface ends up in the same place unless the Transmission is the same length as what is in it now the TC is going to move a little.

T5s have a history of not lasting in I6 jeeps. I believe that is mostly due to poorly thought out gearing/tire combos but never the less, I would not personally put a T-5 behind a 360. If you want OD AX15 or Nv3550s are a much superior Transmission choice.

Thanks again. I used to race a Mustang w a T-5 . They can be made strong enough with good parts. Stock form you can break one driving to the grocery store

Just remember the Jeep never got the World Class T-5 like the Mustang did

Yeah I have read some things about beefing up the T-5 or buying new ones that are much stronger but the price was in the thousands. If you watch CL you can find an NV3550 or AX15 for anywere from 200-500 and in stock form they strong enough for what you need.

Be careful sourcing the NV3550....If it is the same dimensionally as the 4500 it will be too long for a CJ5 unless you are stretching the wheelbase.

according to novak the nv3550 is around 23 inches with bell housing.
