So it's been 6+ years since I pulled the OEM brake lines off the frame. They're long gone.

I have hard line, a bender and a flare tool and I want to get started building up the replacements. I just have one minor problem.

I have no idea where the OEM brake lines ran on the body. I know the exhaust is going to be running down the driver side, coming out of a factory style Y pipe. I'm thinking I can run the hard line down that side but will the exhaust pipe heat it up too much? What about making my own custom heat shield to cover the hard line as it runs down the frame? Would that work?

Can someone tell me how the OEM brake line ran back in the day?
 
Since I have my CJ all torn apart (again), I was able to take a peek for you.

the prop valve is on the driverside frame, which you probably knew. from there the lines run back along the frame to the rear where they cross over the shock area and head up towards the tank almost directly center. They drop back down and split off at the diff where they head off to each side.
the front runs along the same driverside frame rail and crosses over at the front crossmember.

Im running dual exhaust straight back and heat hasn't been an issue with the brakelines.

Hope that helps a bit.

Edit: I believe, without looking again, the hardlines are flared into softlines just above the rear diff before they T off...for reasons of articulation I suppose, like the front lines that exit the frame heading off towards the front calipers.

What about where the exhaust mount attaches to the frame. Does it go through either of the holes or snake around it?

Yep. Naked lines. It just runs on the inside of the frame, towards the top of the framerail.
Im running custom exhaust so I will have to take another look at it, I'll try and get you some pics tomorrow after work.

I just pulled my brake lines out of my 84 CJ7 this past weekend.

From the proportional valve, go straight back 2" then up 2" then run along the frame rail right with the two fuel lines that travel back to the tank. They travel absolutely beside each other and the clips are made for the 3 lines, one on the frame rail above the skid plate, another halfway back, another above the "c" rail that has the body mount, loop around the shock tower close to the body. When you get back to the tank, curve in front of the tank ( there's a stud for a retaining clamp about half way), then to the flex line mount tab.

There is a small tapped hole on the top pass side of the diff ( 1/2way between pumpkin and spring perch) for the hard "t" fitting. The flex line goes from the top hard line at the tab I just described, down to the "t" fitting. The diff lines then go side to side on the diff, one clamp at the 11:00 position on the pumpkin (under one of the tors screws) and a clamp on each spring perch using the small tapped holes in the rear of the perches.

Whew.
 
Oh yeah, anothe strange part, all the lines are 3/16ths, except for the line from the front of the master cylinder down to the top rear of the proportional valve - it's 1/4"

My fuel lines came off when I pulled the brake lines so that doesn't really help all that much. The shock mounts and skid plate are long gone too, along with the rear axle and the gas tank.

Imagine if you will, a bare frame sitting on springs. That's all I have to work with

I do still have the tab on the frame where the flexible hose attaches and then the hard line attaches to it. Any holes for clips would probably still be there and just need a quick run through with a tap.

My biggest question is how did the factory run the lines by the exhaust hanger attached on the inside of the frame? Did they just run it out and around, over, under or run it through one of the holes?

Yeah, all that is gone too. I have a hydroboost setup from a Chevy Astro van with its own proportioning valve.
