I just bought an all original 83 CJ5 and want to do a brake job. Question is are the stock calipers worth rebuilding or should I just buy aftermarket?

For me, it's a question of quality. The OE calipers were (probably) made in the USA in the late '70s or early '80s, the quality of the steel used in them is a lot higher than the chinesium one's you're going to be able to buy new from anywhere. I had the same thought when I redid my rear drum brakes last year, I opted to find a place that would resurface my pushing 40 year old made in the USA drums as opposed to buying chinesium new ones.

Now, if they're corroded to the point that you're concerned with it being a safety issue, and they're at a point that the need to be replaced, then replace them. Heck, take them to your local machine shop and have them sand or media blasted and it's still probably going to cost you less than new.

Chinesium! That is a good one, but an excellent description of the cheap steel used in aftermarket products. Anyway the same comment goes for the cheaper front discs that are on the market.

If the calipers are leaking, then rebuild.
Otherwise, don't mess with'em.
