Howdy, y'all. I was originally talking about this in the "What did you do with your CJ today..." thread, but wanted to get it out here, as it seems like there is more to discuss on the subject than I thought!

Not mine, but this is what the hub in question looks like.

If the issue is one of the two snap rings you can pick one up at your local machine shop or big box store. Typically its a snap ring that breaks.
For parts, any of the following are the same Selectro hub: Sears, Western Auto, Free Lock, Dana Perfect Circle, 4 Wheel Dr, Wienand/Bestop.

If you need a full replacement go used or

Thanks! Yeah, I am hoping to go used, ideally looking for a junk one to clean up and get parts out of. But I guess I'll just buy a new one if I can't turn up any junk by the time the rest of the problems with the jeep are about solved.

The snap ring is missing. And the lip around the base part, that the cap locks into, is actually broken off in 3 places, such that no matter how I position the cap it won't work. Like someone was pounding on it, maybe. Or maybe that missing snap ring caused it. I am not sure. It's been broken since I bought the jeep, but there was a lot of grease leaked out on that spherical end thing (sorry about my redneck technical terms, haha, but I yam what I yam) that the kingpins go into, so I had figured it had just dried out and that cleaning it up and replacing the grease seal and regreasing it would fix it. But no such luck!

I am going to post something about it in classifieds once I have enough posts, assuming I haven't found one by then.

Yeah, it's the "classic locking hub". Not sure how many splines off the top of my head, and the jeep is about 20 minutes away at the machine shop on the farm at the moment, so.... I'll have enough posts to post a want ad soon though, I reckon. :D

So yeah, in summary, the problem is a missing snap ring (easily replaced) and a broken lip at the right edge of the "base" piece (the place that the cam rides on) in this diagram.

Mile Marker is the only one selling new however, they no longer sell 10 spline hubs so your only option is used or rebuilt kits if you can find one.

Hmm, my 10-spline (I assume) drive shaft gear is just fine. I wonder if the "base" pieces are the same between the different models, and if I could just swap my drive shaft gear into a hub that came with a different one and use it... Hmmmmmmm....

I hate to replace these hubs with something different. They are nice and easy to get to without taking gloves off...

Besides your stub shaft being 10 spline the other issue would be shaft thickness between the different hubs. It may be possible to find a selecto hub with a similar size shaft to use the base and other small parts, but why not search for a used 10 spline set they come up for sale now and then. I have a new 10 spline set in my shop I rather not part with but I may have another set in my parts bin I'll look and let you know.

Cool. Thanks, man. I really appreciate it!

I sent Mile Marker and email about it, but I haven't heard anything back yet.

Mostly interested in swapability so that I can widen my junk-finding net. Seems like the 10-spline ones are often more expensive than the ones for the later jeeps, so if I can get a cheap used one for a later jeep and make it work using parts out of the one I've got, that's a few bucks saved to pay for the next problem, I reckon. Just kind of flailing my arms at the darkness trying to keep this thing from turning into too bad a money-pit, yanno? ;)

Well, Mile Marker wasn't interested answering any questions about an axle gear swap. They put great effort into trying to sell me new hubs rather than answering my questions.

Unless I have to work late, I am planning to go down to the farm this evening to finish working on the rear brakes, so I will try to get some pictures and measurements of the hubs while I am there.

Thanks again, man.

No need to take any pics I know what you have. Figure I'll save you some time by mentioning this, unless you want to post for others.

I'd jump on this unused set quick! 10 spline

JLA FORUMS - REQUEST DENIED!

This is cross-posted from another forum, but I figured maybe I ought to put it here for the sake of completeness. I think I found a guy with some parts, but not 100% sure yet. Anyway, I'll keep updating this thread anyway until it's fixed, in case someone happens upon it while searching someday. :)

Ok, here's the whole skinny, to ensure that we're all thinking about the same parts. Sorry about the massive image dump!

Some views of the parts of the broken hub. I forgot to pull the cam out of the diesel fuel it was all soaking in, but I have it and it seems to be in fine shape.

Here you can see the damaged piece.

Here are some measurements.

Here is the spindle that the broken hub came off of. It got dewed on and turned the grease; wasn't full of water to begin with.

Here is a view of the other side, which works, and illustrates the snap ring (and possibly a few other little bits) that are missing on the broken side. It is full of PB Blaster, wasn't runny to begin with.

Thanks again everyone.

I may have another set in my parts bin I'll look and let you know.
Sorry, I only had warn, dualmatic, and cutless hubs in my part bin.
