Howdy, y'all. I was originally talking about this in the "What did you do with your CJ today..." thread, but wanted to get it out here, as it seems like there is more to discuss on the subject than I thought!
Not mine, but this is what the hub in question looks like.

So yeah, in summary, the problem is a missing snap ring (easily replaced) and a broken lip at the right edge of the "base" piece (the place that the cam rides on) in this diagram.

Hmm, my 10-spline (I assume) drive shaft gear is just fine. I wonder if the "base" pieces are the same between the different models, and if I could just swap my drive shaft gear into a hub that came with a different one and use it... Hmmmmmmm....
I hate to replace these hubs with something different. They are nice and easy to get to without taking gloves off...

If the issue is one of the two snap rings you can pick one up at your local machine shop or big box store. Typically its a snap ring that breaks.
For parts, any of the following are the same Selectro hub: Sears, Western Auto, Free Lock, Dana Perfect Circle, 4 Wheel Dr, Wienand/Bestop.
If you need a full replacement go used or

Thanks! Yeah, I am hoping to go used, ideally looking for a junk one to clean up and get parts out of. But I guess I'll just buy a new one if I can't turn up any junk by the time the rest of the problems with the jeep are about solved.
The snap ring is missing. And the lip around the base part, that the cap locks into, is actually broken off in 3 places, such that no matter how I position the cap it won't work. Like someone was pounding on it, maybe. Or maybe that missing snap ring caused it. I am not sure. It's been broken since I bought the jeep, but there was a lot of grease leaked out on that spherical end thing (sorry about my redneck technical terms, haha, but I yam what I yam) that the kingpins go into, so I had figured it had just dried out and that cleaning it up and replacing the grease seal and regreasing it would fix it. But no such luck!
I am going to post something about it in classifieds once I have enough posts, assuming I haven't found one by then.
Yeah, it's the "classic locking hub". Not sure how many splines off the top of my head, and the jeep is about 20 minutes away at the machine shop on the farm at the moment, so.... I'll have enough posts to post a want ad soon though, I reckon.![]()

Mile Marker is the only one selling new however, they no longer sell 10 spline hubs so your only option is used or rebuilt kits if you can find one.
