1971 CJ5, 225 Dauntless, 3 speed transmission, T14 transfer case with overdrive.
I am brand new to this forum and a new 1971 CJ5 owner. It has the V6 Dauntless Buick 225 V6 engine, but I have not been able to identify the Transfer Case .

I have attached photos of the interior shifter configuration and the shift pattern.

I cannot figure out what the middle shifter does. It does not seem to matter if it is in the forward or rear position.

The small shifter does put the jeep into 2w, 4w high, neutral, and 4w low - with no apparent problems.

Any help on understanding this Transfer Case and its proper operation will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Bill

D-18 Transfer Case (single stick shifter) with Warn Overdrive (the middle tall stick). Very cool and from the pictures the CJ looks to be in GREAT shape.

V6 T-86 or T-14 D18
OD forward is Overdrive , rearward is not
I just looked at the pics when I typed above. Then read your post where you mentioned 71, that would be a T-14 , the T-86 came a few years before 68

You have a great piece of Jeep history there.
Tell us more about it.

Shifting forward gives you Overdrive , basically gives you 16 gears.
Use the clutch when shifting the Overdrive just like your Transmission .
Don't use the OD to downshift wears on the syncros
Make sure your Transfer Case is always filled it supplies the fluid for the OD
When it's time to dump the Transfer Case fluid,
Fill the Transfer Case then shift the Transfer Case in neutral, and Transmission in high gear.
Run at high idle for 8-10 mins, this sends fluid to the OD.
Recheck the Transfer Case fluid, add if needed.

Wow!! Thanks guys, for the fast answer to my mystery!! I appreciate the new knowledge!

I've had a few jeeps along the way....a 1951 M38, 1954 M38A1, and now this one...'71 CJ5 . I still have the '54 M38A1, the grand pappy to the CJ. :)

I attached some pics of both jeeps.
