The 2 big tubes on top of the carb are vent tubes for the float bowl, they go to the charcoal canister. it would be a good thing to rebuild the carb to get rid of the dried up gaskets and fuel in it, I would also bring the motor up to top dead center on #1 cylinder and check rotor position to cap and wire and timing marks on vibration dampener to make sure it all line up. Correctly so you can proceed with trouble shooting. You could have weak/no spark or timing off. It should have fired right up splashing gas in carb.

I looked up what the charcoal canister is. Yes the two tubes coming from it are cut. Am I correct in assuming that it will likely not be a bad idea to replace it once things are running in the future with a new one seeing that it is 30+ years old?

The spark plugs don't look in very good shape even though I tried to clean them up before putting them back in. Maybe I should start off with a new set as my first step?

The carb is really dirty on the inside. I just looked up a video on rebuilding it. I guess I have nothing to lose trying right?

As far as "bring the motor up to top dead center on #1 cylinder and check rotor position to cap and wire and timing marks on vibration dampener to make sure it all line up." I'm gonna have to do much more research before I get into that. :D:D

Feeling a bit over whelmed

Thanks again for your help.

I hope you are getting the real FSM, MR-252.
The Haynes and such are OK. But do not go into the detail the true FSM does.
