1983 cj7 , six cylinders , 5 speed , 2.5 inch skyjacker suspension lift , 2 inch body , 35 x 12.50 x 15's ,one piece axles , just bought this cj after PO stored for the past 25 yrs ,
From your “handle” I assume the CJ in question is a 1977 model year and no, the 1977 CJ did not come from the factory with a 5 speed regardless of engine size. The CJ factory 5 speed started in the 1982 with the T-5 .
1979 Jeep CJ5 with 304 V8, T18 Transmission, Dana 20 Transfer case with TeraLow 3:1 gears, 4.88 axle gears, Detroit Locker up front and Ox Locker in back with 1 piece axle shafts, 36" SuperSwamper SX Tires, Shackle reversal, MileMarker Hydraulic winch, MSD 6A ignition.
The only 5 speed to go into a CJ from the factory was the T-5 . It came with the 4 and 6 cylinder engines from 1982 to 1986.
If you want to put an '82 Transmission onto a '77 strait six you would need the bellhousing and clutch linkage from the '82. Then you would need the Dana 300Transfer Case that came with the T-5 . The driveshaft lengths would also need to be modified.
It would be a waste of time even if you got the parts for free. The T-5 was amoung the worst transmissions to go into a CJ. Check out these links regarding the T-5 : Weak Transmissions of the '80s
