I'm still learning about my 82 CJ5 , I've decoded the vin but is there a way to figure out what edition if any it is/was?

The first thing I would be interested in would be what needs fixing and maintaince that needs to be done. It does sound like you have a good base to work from though.

I'm working on that stuff, already had new long block put in, seals in tc done, tranny rebuilt. Brakes are good all around, fluids in front and rearend replaced, got all outside lights working. I am getting ready to figure out fuel and temp gauge issue.

I was just curious because when I look for parts it always ask the edition. I would also like to find out original color, under the black is a orangey/brown but I can't tell if that is original or not. I think it has rustoleum black right now from po.

When they ask for "edition" you can pretty much say whatever comes into your mind as the parts will all be the same. Edition is just a paint and trim package. Just tell them you have the "Baja edition", that will wind them up.:D

Well I am following the thread posted by BajaEdition on what to do after you get home.

Im seeing just a base model. No tach , clock , dash pad or Renegade or Laredo seats.

Thanks Pete

Its a nice CJ5 though. :) You may want to check your windshield frame for rot. Its leaning back pretty far in this pic.

Tireman, recording all your maintaince work and when you did all other work on your rig is good to know also. On that windshield tilt there is a dimension that goes from the tailgate to the top of the windshield in the Supertop instruction manual.

How do I do that Pete? Do I unscrew those 2 big screws on each side and fold it down?

Yup. You may have to loosen or remove the two that are the top of each one of those brackets as well. You'll see them right away. The 3 bolts on each side make a "Y" pattern with the bottom one being that lage screw. :)

Do you have doors and do they fit? If they do I would leave it alone. IMO

Hinges look good as far as I can tell. No binding or squeaking when I folder the windshield down. I eventually plan to replace them with chrome ones but I haven't been to worried with cosmetic issues until I get all the mechanical things working.

Soft doors and they fit ok and latch closed
Then as I said leave it alone your doors fit and the top fits they are telling you it doesn't look right by looking at a pic.

I will say that comparing pics mine does look to be leaning back a little but all the hardware and pieces look to be in good shape. So I'll look into that later down the road.
