To bad your so far away, I live outside of Cin. Oh. just across the river from Ky.
Thought if you were closer I could lend a eyeball if you found something to check out.
I'm with Pete try to find out as much as you can before you drive to far. But as you know already that doesn't always work so well.

1977 Jeep CJ7 with hardtop and 304 V8

I definitely like the flat black look of this one better- but it is automatic - and I prefer manual.

Not sure about the story on it.

I really hesitate to even ask this dumb question.....lol.

The jeep I drove the other day had a oil pressure guage - so what is that all about-and what am I looking for as far as problems?

Seems the temperature guages don't work in some of these either- is that just a coincidence?

Yes cj's temp and gas gauges tend to not work, they can be fixed though.
The oil pressure gauge should read around 40 (depends of what engine) and
be steady. If it's jumping up and down thats not good. higher than 40 is alright
and as low as 20 can be lived with. I'd pass if it was less than 20 or it was jumping around.
It will be lower at idle than at higher RPM's driving down the road, thats normal.
 
About your ? on the wider part it's the axels that are wider and that gives it a wider trac so it will drive better down the road. I have a '84 and it drives nice my CJ5 with the narrow trac was all over the road. And if the gauges dont work right it may have some wire problems.
 
After everything we told you I don't understand why you are even looking at Jeeps that were pre '82. Those are the narrow track jeeps. The wide track ones are after '82. The extra width does make a difference on a street jeep imo. :chug:
 
There is more to choose from pre-82. I was just wondering if it was "that" big of a difference- that's all- I don't plan on mudding or driving very fast- but of course I don't want to flip over either. I noticed a lot of you guys have older ones?
I get what you are trying to tell me though.

Go look at both even if you don't plan to buy them and take them for a ride.
You really should drive as many as possable so you know good from bad.
That way you can see if it makes any difference to you.
I've owned both, I'm not sure there's that much difference on the road,
alittle maybe, but not that much.
Offroad now thats a different story.
 
Thanks Old Dog.....just when I thought I had made my mind up- you throw that doubt back in ;)

I think I'm leaning towards the red one- with the ugly steering wheel.
He want's $5500 for it

He tells me it has:
I6 that was rebuilt 30,000 miles ago. Now has 120,000
4 speed manual not been rebuilt but he says no problems with it.
Never off road- he's second owner and has had it for 12 years.
All gauges work- (that's a first)
No rust problems
4x4 works

He sent more pictures- they look ok. couple scratches but doesn't "look" like anything major.

The chrome stuff has to go- not really into that. Do you see the two smaller lights on the grill? Do all jeeps have that- I usually see mounted ones on the front bumper.

What do you think about the price?

Now that I look at others I guess they do have the smaller lights in the grill. :)
 
If it's really what he says it is the price sounds fair for my area. But I would still try to talk him down some.
Take a good look at the frame behind the rear wheels and where the springs mount and where the body mounts for rust. These are common places that the frame rusts out.
 
I do like that red one. If it is really nice then it might be a good deal. The in person look is just so important with these. If the metal and all the important stuff is there then that price seems fair. It just so hard to tell sometimes with these until you actually drive it and take a good look at it. Prices on these are all over the place because it depends on a lot. Just take a look at Collins brothers . . .
 
He says no rust - we'll see tomorrow I guess. I'm driving to look at it- at least I can stop at the zoo even if I don't buy it @ Memphis.

We agreed on $4750 plus 4 nights at my cabin in Gatlinburg TN. That's contingent upon if everything he has told me is correct.

I bought the red 84. This smiley is actually how I felt driving the 3 hours home too! lol.

Well, that feeling of pure joy was alternated with "what the hell have I got myself into". But mostly it was good. Minus the cruise, air, power windows/locks, quietness and bumpier than hell road.

That's a long ride in a jeep by yourself that rides like a log wagon and the steering wheel with a LOT of play in it- sometimes feeling like I was all over the road.

But it has a lift on it - have no idea what it is but it is higher than stock jeep.

Ha! It took me 1.5 hours of it to figure out how to dim the lights.....yes I was probably born later than those things were invented.

Actually it didn't have much rust at all- other than the area below the driver door is beginning to show a couple bubbles/spots- but I am going to paint it anyway- so I will fix that. Frame looked good (so far). It has been taken care of for the most part.

I'll save my post for tomorrow with all the problems that I am already having.....:D
