So, 74 CJ5 , AMC 304 V8. I have rebuilt the carb twice, new coil, new distributor, new wires, and new fuel pump. To start the engine, I usually have to prime the carb. When it runs, it runs smoothly, for maybe 5 minutes, but then it's almost like someone turns off the key. I'm on the second coil. The first was an OEM, and the second is an Accell. I have been told that I need a coil with an internal resister to keep it from overheating. I have also been told, by a mechanic that works on Jeeps, that it's something still in the carb that's still the problem. A new carb cost $300.
Any suggestions on what I may be missing? Thanks.

How hot does the coil get in that 5 minutes? Can you keep your hand on it??
When was the last time the fuel filter was replaced?
FIRE that so called mechanic that wants $300.00 for a carb you don't need.
Accel coils are not the best. I have seen several fail.
Go to NAPA and get an OEM type coil. Don't buy from Auto Zone or such. All they sell is China :dung:.
At NAPA, tell'em you want USA made coil.
Does your choke start to open after the 5 minute run?

new wires,

Is it possible that you made a mistake here? There has been a lot of discussion on this forum lately about wiring. It seems that a lot of people are trying to fix their wire harness because it was a mess when they bought the vehicle. However they are finding out that there is more to it than just replacing wires. If you've read these posts and have eliminated the wiring possibilities, then please disregard.
